But when you encounter that resistance–and you will, regularly–know that you must respond just how we have had to these past 50 years. With love, and sternness, and most of all, courage. Because that is what the resistance fears the most. We who came before you promise that we will do the same while we wait for you. Know that you will never be alone.

To the generation after mine,

It has always seemed like a hopeless effort. Sometimes it seems every person with the power to enact change has refused to do so. From those in our governments, to our leaders in technology, and energy, and discovery, to economic giants and political behemoths, we have asked them to let this world of ours live on. We have asked them to let our descendants live in a brighter future. And the answer always seems to be “No.”

But we have not been discouraged. Because in reality, they cannot give us the same answer forever. And by the time you read this, we aim to have done what they should have, whether or not their answers changes. Because change doesn’t just come from those in power–it comes from the masses that resist the urge for complacency.

We won’t let our planet, our home, be decimated. Most predictions tell us that by your time, it will be too late. But that is only if we don’t act. We are putting more pressure on our officials. We are making greater strides in healthy technology. We are organizing our communities, our states, our entire nations to ensure that our water is clean, our food is ethical, our forests are protected, our energy is renewable, our emissions are minimal, our wildlife endures, our cities are green, and that our societies are just.

What we expect by your time is that progress will have been made. We do not expect the world to be doomed as it would be without action. We hope that enough change will have been made to give you all a fighting chance. And most importantly, we do not expect you to be leading that change alone. We will still be there, with you, older but just as dedicated.

It is easy to become discouraged. Though positive change is not inherently a slow process, all social movements have been slow, because there will always be resistance. But when you encounter that resistance–and you will, regularly–know that you must respond just how we have had to these past 50 years. With love, and sternness, and most of all, courage. Because that is what the resistance fears the most. We who came before you promise that we will do the same while we wait for you. Know that you will never be alone.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to take my bike everywhere. Taking Golden Gate Transit to SF tonight.

Dear Grown up Alton and Dot,

The most important thing in my life is you, which means that as your mom – I am doing my very best to make sure that when you read this letter, Earth is a cleaner and safer place for you and your children.

Dear future generations,

Past generations took all the trees, polluted all the water, fished all the fish, and hunted all the animals so that there’s almost nothing nice left.

Dear Gorasia descendants,

I will do all that I can, and hope my fellow inhabitants join my pursuit, to nurture this planet.

Dear Luna,

I will never give up on you, on humanity, on the future.

Vitória,

Antes de realizar qualquer ação pense no meio ambiente para que suas atitudes sejam pautadas na sustentabilidade. Assim o seu pensar e agir localmente poderão resvalar na escala global.

To My Future Children,

I hope by 2050, our society has taken initiative to be producing energy solely through renewable sources.

Caro Giovanni,

Dobbiamo aiutare nel conservare il bello che c’è nel nostro pianeta.

To all the children of the future and those who love them,

While there is still breath in this body I will give of my soul and my time and energy to making the world a better place, for you, and all the beautiful living beings of this world.

I promise to help people! Become more aware!

Dear Kids,

My mistake was thinking I needed to give you more to be a good Mom. Recently your aunt asked me what my favorite toy was growing up. I gulped, I didn’t have one- it was the outdoors, sliding down a ravine of leaves with my Dad, skiing and camping. Today is October 12th, 2021 and I am still going to be giving you a lot, it’s going to look a little different – love, experiences, education and a healthy planet.

Dear future 82-year old me,

29 years later, I wish I still can ride bike and go some lovely places in nature. Sky is blue and air is fresh, I will be shining under the sun.
