To the future generation,

Hello to whoever reads this letter in the future. Today is a beautiful sunny day without a single cloud in sight. The sun is warm with a slight breeze tingling down my face as I walk on the sidewalks. Over the next ten, twenty or even thirty years, these clear, sunny skies may not even exist. At the current rate of pollution and climate change that we are currently experiencing, cities may begin to fill up with smog and pollution. I fear the day that we may not ever see a sunny day in the future.

The natural environments of many places all around the world are changing more rapidly than we have ever expected. Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, and it is only getting worse. Cities by the shore could potentially be new cities of Atlantis. Hopefully, by the time this is read, we would have already fixed our sea level problem, but as of this moment, the future seems bleak. I would hate to have to see cities such as Miami, or even San Francisco underwater.

Many people still don’t believe in climate change and its effects on the environment, but when everyone suddenly does begin to believe, I fear that it may be too late. We can still mitigate the amount of damage we have done and many people are actively doing so each and every single day. People have begun to recycle more and using more energy efficient methods of life. I truly hope that by the time someone reads this, we would have fully converted to sustainable methods of living. Whether it is through wind, hydro, solar, or even some un-invented source of power, it doesn’t matter. As long as we all begin to mitigate our energy consumption and conserve more, these beautiful, clear and sunny skies should still shine as brightly as today. I like to remain optimistic about the future and with everyone’s help, we can all make the future a better place for future generations to come.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Luna,

I will never give up on you, on humanity, on the future.

To my daughters,

In order for you two be happy and healthy, we all need to work hard to prevent climate change.

Meus filhos,

Devemos conservar nosso planeta. Mas, para se fazer isso, temos que fazer isso juntos. Todos os seres humanos devem estar voltados para cuidar bem do lar em que vivemos e do presente que Deus nos deu para viver: a Terra.

Dear friends,

We need to rethink our consumption habits in order to reduce the impacts on the environment.

To My Future Self,

This lead me to my final project, which focused on reforming the education system to incorporate sustainability classes into the current curriculum.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to reach out to more people to ditch driving and consider using public transportation. I promise to convince Marin markets that sensible policies in density and mixed use planning will further enhance everyone’s quality of life.

Hey Kiddos!

My hope for you is that all our legislative efforts and care for the environment makes a difference so that we can wipe asthma out of our family.

Dear Tomorrow,

And, if this summer has taught me anything, I am content (because I have to be) living in this limbo, this seemingly endless waiting for the opportunity to change, when really the opportunity exists within our very selves all along.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to drive less and walk more.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to ride more and drive less.

To my Beloved Future Children,

Be fearless – do not be afraid to talk to each other and do not be afraid to fail.

Dear Future Family,

As I’m sitting here trying to think of the best words to say to you all, I am thinking of one major thing: that I can only hope that you all get to experience the incredible beauty created by our planet.
