To the Denizens of the Future,

I’m half-surprised, really, that a digital time capsule like this even made it to you. So many things could have gone wrong. The world’s ecosystems could have collapsed. Someone could have started nuclear armageddon. Maybe nobody uses emails in the future. Regardless, it made it, and someone may or may not be reading. To the reader,

This is your freshmen-year-college self. Society as a whole is beginning to realize that climate change is a serious threat, despite all of Donald Trump’s reassuring us that it is not. The 2020 election is fast approaching, and I’m eager to see if the Commander in Queef will be re-elected. The fate of the world climate may depend on it.

I’m a pessimist, so I’m inclined to believe that this message won’t reach you, and that if it does, our climate will be destroyed. But on the off chance that everything is nice and happy in the future?

Nice. Cheers!

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

And, if this summer has taught me anything, I am content (because I have to be) living in this limbo, this seemingly endless waiting for the opportunity to change, when really the opportunity exists within our very selves all along.

Dear Future Me,

I hope that when we look back on these years,  you’ll see that humanity can be good. That we joined together and fixed it because of we don’t, who will?

Dear Tomorrow,

We want to let others know about how to fight climate crisis.

To My Dear Children, Jackson Carlo and Stella Jane,

I am a better person because of you, and I want the world to be a better place for you.

Dear Alanna and Valeria,

I promise you to keep trying, to keep educating, to keep pushing our elected officials to act and protect your health now and in the future.

dear future people (:

I am writing this message to you guys. When I look outside my window today, I see a beautiful world that others and myself call “home sweet home.” The trees glimmering in warm sunlight, the air stirring a cool breeze, and the water flowing down rivers are parts of our home Mother Earth.

Dear Tomorrow,

Be the person who shows up. Be the person who continues to advocate for change because change is possible – it is possible in the most partisan of politics.

Dearest Finlay,

I hope you are healthy and happy and that you feel supported by the ecosystem around you because we are all deeply truly interconnected. We depend on the earth to take care of us, and nature needs us to take care of her in turn. We all need each other.

Querida Alê,

Por você idealizei um mundo melhor e lutei incessantemente por ele.

Dear future 82-year old me,

29 years later, I wish I still can ride bike and go some lovely places in nature. Sky is blue and air is fresh, I will be shining under the sun.

Dear children,

Despite all the difficulties, we are from a family whose principles are honesty and love for others, and that’s what I want to share with you.

Dear Rowan and Anaka,

If we could talk, I would not be able to bear your gaze as you ask: How could you, the people in a position to change the course of climate change, fail to act?
