To a Child of the Anthropocene

Winds will blow harder and longer, My Little One
Waves will reach farther and deeper, My Precious One
Can you learn to be stronger
Than I ever needed to be?

Trees and the birds are now leaving us, Little One
Flowers recede before asphalt, Precious One
Natural beauty once pleasing us
Is now hidden from view

I fear that Prosperity’s pleasures
My own abundance and plentitude such as I knew
Will be harder for you to inherit
Oh were it not true!

Do not spare us your judgment, ever, My Little One
Render such verdict upon us that we deserve.
But perhaps, my Precious One,
As you become far more adaptive and clever,

Wisdom will come to you earlier
As you seek out a style of life that will see us thru
And we in our old age will gladly sit down
To begin learning from you

More Messages to the Future

To My Future Nephews,

I want you to see those corn fields in the north, the beautiful beaches down in Florida, and the stars in the woods at night.

Dear Rowan and Anaka,

If we could talk, I would not be able to bear your gaze as you ask: How could you, the people in a position to change the course of climate change, fail to act?

Dear Future

My hope is for all who live in your time to still know the joy of swimming in the ocean, walking through the woods, and hiking in the mountains.

Dear Kids,

I know it’s long past time to wake up. You deserve a future in which drought, famine, and war are not all your children ever know; the choices my generation makes now will determine your future.

My darlings, Juno & Vaeda,

You ask insightful questions, and together we learn about the mysterious world we inhabit.

Dear Tomorrow,

No plastic straws, no water bottles, shop local, no meat.

Dear Ellie,

My heart is an ocean of love for all the children facing a life of climate catastrophe.

Dear Future,

“I knew you would want to know how the future turned out. You got so anxious about climate change as we grew older.  By coming back, I thought I could help you with that.”

Meus filhos,

Devemos conservar nosso planeta. Mas, para se fazer isso, temos que fazer isso juntos. Todos os seres humanos devem estar voltados para cuidar bem do lar em que vivemos e do presente que Deus nos deu para viver: a Terra.

Dear People Of The Future,

It’s scary, this is the stuff you see in movies about the end of the world.

Dear X—, Dear A—,

As with our struggles to eliminate police brutality, as with hate crimes, so it is with climate change – there are actually a lot of people out there who care.

To my grandchildren’s children,

I became an activist to be part of a force to save the natural world and go 100% clean energy.
