To my grandson,

I hope this letter finds you coming home to a livable and affordable space, that you have a tree shading you and that you have dinner ready to be picked from your own sustainable garden plot. I hope that I have left you with the education that will help you make good choices for you, your community and as a citizen of Earth. I know that you’ve had to be stronger and more creative than your parents and your grandpa and I did. I wish there were more things that my generation could have done for you but hopefully you will be able to do better for yours. We love you and know that we at least left you some tools to help.

To all the children of the future and those who love them,

While there is still breath in this body I will give of my soul and my time and energy to making the world a better place, for you, and all the beautiful living beings of this world.

Dear loved ones in the future,

Even if it pains me to imagine how things are back home in Puerto Rico at the moment, I know things will flourish again. The land will heal, but we need to help it.

Dear Ezmae,

As I write this, I consider giving up as it sometimes seems that all is lost. But then I think of you.

Dear Kai and Leah,

I want you to feel awestruck like I do. It is important to feel small sometimes, to feel the weight of reality, to recognize the scale of a challenge, to see where you fit and what you are up against. This is the case with climate change.

Dear Rowan and Anaka,

If we could talk, I would not be able to bear your gaze as you ask: How could you, the people in a position to change the course of climate change, fail to act?

To my beloved granddaughters, Margaret and Caroline,

Growing up in Germany, I often wondered what my parents had done to oppose the Nazi regime in the 1930’s that led to WWII. I was so disappointed when I found out how passive they had been. For me, this was formative.

Dear future child,

We’re presenting at conferences, writing articles, and organizing events with the goal of mobilizing our profession to act on climate, and to help them understand that it will deeply impact our mission to preserve history for future generations.

Dear Tomorrow

I will become the change I wish to see in the world.
