To my Grandchildren,

I first learnt about climate change or environmental issues when I was eleven years old in year six. At the school I went to, every year the current bunch of grade six students, as a whole class, would work together on an important topic which we would then present at the year end. That year, our class did our project on “global warming and climate change”. But, since then even though I learnt much about the different climate change and global warming issues facing the Earth, these issues have been very distant to me, sometimes they almost feel abstract. Some people today, in 2017, won’t even give attention to issues of climate change or global warming. To them these are just false ideas. It’s us with our small, daily, unmindful actions over the course of time that have caused the damage you see today, the damage you’ve read about in school.

Everything we see around us that is natural isn’t ours to do what we want. From the animals, to the trees, the waters, the ice and the air, all of it is equal to us. Just another part of the earth, just like we are. So treat it like you would if it were another person, because it is equal to us. Like most things, when you attack it or harm it, it responds itself with it’s own attack or self-defense. The vicious hurricanes, the piercing heat or the animals you don’t get to see, all that is just the Earth’s response to our attacks on it. So, treat it with some care and respect, you don’t have to dedicate your whole live to treating the planet but do more good to it than harm. Maybe then, it’ll let you stay a little longer.

I want this letter to act as some sort of hedge for you. And for me, some sort of pledge as well to just put the conscious effort to do a little more good to the planet than harm. The small destructive actions of the generations before you have caused horrible consequences for the planet. In the same way, small caring actions of your generation could cause the planet to live the way it’s supposed to again.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Yasmine,

I tried to teach you of the importance of being satisfied with what you had within your hands.

Dear Future Generations,

I promise to make as many changes to my life as possible to make yours as great as mine.

Dear Future Grandchildren,

I hope I can look you in the eye and tell you I honestly did everything I could to protect our planet.

People of tomorrow,

Your path will only be as clear tomorrow as we have made it for you today.

Pour ma famille,

Il faut trouver le 7ème sens et se battre pour des causes justes, comme l´amour et la liberté.

Dear Future Self,

More than getting through a global pandemic that has already taken hundreds of thousands of lives around the world, our true feat is even larger: to secure our long-term health and the health of the ecosystems upon which we depend for life. To do that, we have to cut our emissions in half in the next ten years, and continue to reduce it beyond that. And to succeed in that, we need to fundamentally shift the way we do EVERYTHING.

Dear Future Ryan,

I promise to be a knight in the campaign of truth seeking.

Dear humankind of today and tomorrow,

I do wish to contribute as much as I can, maybe even start a ripple effect, where other people will start taking action too and inspire other people too.

Happy 34th birthday my son.

To laugh at our efforts as they were on such a small scale, too small some would say to make a difference, and then smile when we think about the number families just like ours that did the same thing.

Meus filhos,

Devemos conservar nosso planeta. Mas, para se fazer isso, temos que fazer isso juntos. Todos os seres humanos devem estar voltados para cuidar bem do lar em que vivemos e do presente que Deus nos deu para viver: a Terra.

Dear Grandchildren — August and any others who were born after him

I joined millions of other people who wrote letters and made calls urging our leaders to do more to care for the planet.

Dear tomorrow,

The blue sky will no longer be grey, and the bleak clouds will be vibrant.
