To My Grandchildren,

It is currently 10:56 on September 29,2019. I’m simply on my Apple computer doing homework for French class. I have no clue when or where you will read this, but I sure do hope you will obtain this letter. I’m writing to you because our current world’s health is in danger. Millions and millions of people are oblivious with what is going on: the earth is heating up. I’m sure you already know or will eventually learn why our earth is rapidly growing hotter, but regardless it is a major issue. I want you to know that I do everything in my will to prevent my own carbon footprint (how much I personally contribute to global warming) from expanding. I never leave the water running, always turn my lights off when not using them, and always recycle properly. I wish for you to do the same and to spread those ideas to your friends, peers, and the rest of our family. I hope one day when I’m old and grey we can read this letter together, and admire the changes our population has implemented in our society. I hope we can breathe incredibly fresh air, and not worry about wearing masks when we walk outside. I know we will be okay, and I cannot wait to meet you. I love you.

Sincerely,

Will Rickert

More Messages to the Future

Dear Jamie and Jason,

My inspiration was the two of you. It started with thinking about the world you were inheriting and what your future was going to be like. But then you taught me how important it is to listen to you – to listen to young people.

Dear Children,

I wish I had a crystal ball and could peep into it to see you all happy and safe in a world that nourishes you and that is also nourished by you, a world where the resources it provides are as valued as the people in it and not frittered away by greed and power.

To my beloved granddaughters, Margaret and Caroline,

Growing up in Germany, I often wondered what my parents had done to oppose the Nazi regime in the 1930’s that led to WWII.  I was so disappointed when I found out how passive they had been. For me, this was formative.

Dear Tomorrow,

Less meat, more on my feet!

Dear Sinchi,

The world is changing and it is happening fast.

To older Rochelle,

You should’ve reduced your carbon footprint, should be using some source of renewable energy and be a vegetarian by now.

Dear Evan,

What has most inspired me to act is wanting to be able to look you in the eye and say, “When I became aware of the existential threat of climate change, I did all I could.”  Despite my pessimism, I act in the hope it can make a difference for future generations and all the precious life on our fragile planet.

Dear Society,

If we work together to spread the awareness of what is occurring today, we will be able to prevent it from continuing into the tomorrow.

To my Maria and her children,

I have to tell you something: it is so hard to keep our life “green” for now, but we still keep trying.

Dear children,

Despite all the difficulties, we are from a family whose principles are honesty and love for others, and that’s what I want to share with you.

Dear Alanna and Valeria,

I promise you to keep trying, to keep educating, to keep pushing our elected officials to act and protect your health now and in the future.

Dear Nova and Remi,

I wish for you both that another kind of life has been discovered, one of peace, moderation and concern for all life.
