To my future kid,

Do you know how to love? Have you learned to love? Have you loved a person, a craft, a thing? Do you have a burning passion that drives you? Or has time run out, and the last grain of sand has slipped through the hourglass? I am currently 20 years old, and unfortunately, I think I have just begun to learn how to love. I am 20 years old and I have spent my years wandering around doing nothing, in a state of absolute oblivion, not knowing the definition of love or passion. I am currently 20 years old and have the luxury to realize that these are my good old days, and that now is the perfect time to embrace happiness in whatever form I find it in.

I will be 51 years old when you read this, and I hope I will have learned to love by then. I will be 51 years old and I hope you will be young enough, yet old enough to realize you are in your good old days. I will be 51 years old and I pray to god that you will have the same luxury as I once did. To be young and free to discover your own love and passion for others and yourself. And I want to give you the head start I never had, but I’m scared I’ll never get that chance.

I hope the world looks more beautiful than it does today. I hope that the sky stops bleeding red at twilight. I hope the seas stop choking on our trash. And I hope the things I’ve done today helped pave the way for a cleaner tomorrow.

Sincerely

Your old man, Felipe Rodriguez Garcia

More Messages to the Future

Dear Potential Future Kiddo,

To think that my choices of sustainable commuting, eating a plant based diet, and working on our City’s zero waste program likely pale in comparison to the impact of not having a baby is nothing short of devastating.  Does it make me a bad environmentalist to honor my maternal instincts?

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to pick up trash at every beach I visit, use metal straws, take quick showers.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to reach out to more people to ditch driving and consider using public transportation. I promise to convince Marin markets that sensible policies in density and mixed use planning will further enhance everyone’s quality of life.

Dear Earth,

I will keep the air clean so everyone can see the sunset.

Dear Nieces and Nephews,

I tried.

To my brother’s children,

We wondered about how we might be able to eliminate plastics from our day to day routines, and recycled literally everything. We were amazing, you should have seen us. Now and again though, we wondered if these were the right questions.

Querido amanhã,

Em fim, espero que você receba essa mensagem, e entenda o quão pequenos nos somos e como é importante preservar o planeta terra.

Dear Josh, LeeAnn, & Jessica,

I am very proud to know that You will treat Our Earth, Our Natural Gift, Our Playful Backyard with the same Awesome Respect that We give to each other, as a Family – Knowing that Our Earth, is Your Child Now.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will use less fossil fuels.

Dear Annalyse and Greyson,

See people can say they care about climate change, but caring is not action.

My dearest children Ameilia and Alivia,

I want you to hear the whispers of the seasons changing. The rustling of leaves as they gracefully cascade down from their limbs in the fall, birds singing in spring, and frogs that serenade the summer night.

Dear Tomorrow,

No plastic straws, no water bottles, shop local, no meat.
