To My Future Children,

I write to you in a time of ecological destruction, with imminent social and environment issues going largely unnoticed, particularly by our current presidency under Trump. I write to you in hopes that your life with be less surrounded by the influence of corporate greed and more so by love and understanding of the natural world around you. Hopefully the world you live in can see global climate change as an issue of the past, one that worked to awaken the masses to our dying mother earth.

I have many fears about the world you may be born into as well. I am so incredibly afraid you will have to live in a world lacking in biodiversity. I hope you’re able to learn through picture books filled with currently endangered animals such as polar bears, big cats, and gorillas, and fall in love with these mysterious animals as much as I did. I hope you get to live in a world where breathtaking corral reefs now thrive, and the ocean species with them, such as butterfly fish and sea turtles. I long for you to live in a world where these natural ecosystems can inspire and teach you, as they did for me. I hope you live in a world in which these eco-systems can exist, safe from the human anti-midas touch.

Most importantly, I hope you live in a world where science is taken seriously and fact is clearly distinguished from fiction. I pray you live in a world where environmental health is an inalienable right for all, no matter the political party. Overall, I hope you live in a world of understanding and respect for others and the earth.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will take short showers, eat less meat, and buy local more often.

Dear future generations,

Past generations took all the trees, polluted all the water, fished all the fish, and hunted all the animals so that there’s almost nothing nice left.

Querido amanhã,

Em fim, espero que você receba essa mensagem, e entenda o quão pequenos nos somos e como é importante preservar o planeta terra.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I’ll replace our lights with LED lights.

My dear granddaughter Christy,

My own curiosity and knowing what a caring, aware young woman you are help me override despair.

Dear Rowan and Anaka,

If we could talk, I would not be able to bear your gaze as you ask: How could you, the people in a position to change the course of climate change, fail to act?

Dear Lalo,

I hope whatever happens, whatever I can’t imagine that you may face, that you will continue to seek light.

Dear Jack,

Right now you are only a little over 5 weeks old, but you have truly changed my whole world. Your Mom and I always say that we thought we loved before you were born, but now that you have come into the world and we met you, our ability to love just expanded exponentially.

Dear future me,

I am 19 years old, and I am angry.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will convince my family to switch their gas appliances to electric.
