I am doing everything I can because I want the footprint that I leave behind to be my feet in the sand on a beach and not a carbon one.

To my future children,

I do not know what kind of world you are living in now. Whatever it has become, I hope it is far better then the direction we are in right this very moment. I hope the change we are trying to make to our today has made a difference to your tomorrow.

Life is not a fairytale, only sometimes it is; There is always a kingdom, there is always a soldier, there is always battle and there is always a villain. Our kingdom is earth and she is in danger, our soldiers are the people who chose to fight for what is right, our battle is global warming and climate change and our villains?….well, our villains do not look frightening, they do not have frightening powers, they simply lie to and mislead anyone who is willing to listen and I want you to know that your mother was someone who did not listen to the villains of this story, I chose to hear the truth, the truth that our planet is dying and as her caretakers we have an obligation to save her.

Climate change is real, it is not a scary story told to children before bed, it is not a game even though some of us treat it like it is, a lot of us are playing Russian roulette with out planet, pushing her and pushing her not realising just how fragile she really is. But they are the villains, so where do the soldiers come in? right now! we are fighting with every breath we have to ensure your future is guaranteed.

There are people, good people who have already taken action, from burning less fossil fuel, reducing oil spills by adopting better transporting tactics and the major one, solar energy. In fact, If you are reading this from a computer I hope it is being powered by solar energy, and if you are reading this off of a paper I hope it is printed on recycled paper.

And in case you were wondering, your mother is a soldier. I never use a dryer, I always hang my clothes on a line to dry naturally and this saves energy, I always recycle and reuse what I can, I do not drive a car which is one less air polluter on the road. I am doing everything I can because I want the footprint that I leave behind to be my feet in the sand on a beach and not a carbon one. I hope this letter finds you in a world that we all fought for, a world we called ‘a better tomorrow’.

To conclude this letter I leave you with this, change can be scary but sometimes necessary. I hope the change that we are making today has changed your future, which is now your present, for the better. Once you realise just how fragile our world really is, that is when you realise it is not that big after all, the world is a tiny seed, we must always help it grow.
