To My Future Children,

I’m writing you this letter on March 1, 2018. You are a thought in my mind, in the distant future, a future I hope can become more progressive as we grow and develop new technologies. You never see this, but I want to document this letter to write it to look back and see how we have progressed as a world. As effects of climate change set in, we have recently felt the harsh realities in our own country. You will hear about the fires in my home state, how some of my friends had to evacuate their homes for safety and how I stressed out your grandmother by demanding we donate goods to the people that lost their homes. I want you to read this and realize that this is just one of the things that has happened in the recent past, and provoke you to think about how you can help the future.

There will be stories told to you by your grandparents and uncle on how I was a strange, eclectic woman that dressed in secondhand clothes and worked at an animal rescue and vintage store in my teenage years, but I want to teach you all of the ways I integrated sustainability into my daily life to try to prevent contributing wasteful emissions. This will explain why our house has solar panels and why we do not use straws. You will hear from all my friends on how I ranted and raved on the textile industry and made my college roommates live a zero-waste lifestyle to the best of their ability, and even in our house I am still trying my best.

This is the time in our lives that sustainability is more important than ever, as the glaciers are melting and places like Florida and Texas have experienced massive flooding. These catastrophes have been caused by my generation and past generations, and we are finally starting to take a big step forward to a better future. I sincerely hope that you will continue to make the world a better place as I am still trying to right now.

Love,

Brigit

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will use less fossil fuels.

Dear future generations,

Past generations took all the trees, polluted all the water, fished all the fish, and hunted all the animals so that there’s almost nothing nice left.

People of tomorrow,

Your path will only be as clear tomorrow as we have made it for you today.

Dear tomorrow,

The blue sky will no longer be grey, and the bleak clouds will be vibrant.

Dear Maya,

Maya, my love, I promise to be courageous. I promise that when I face a decision, I will think of how it will impact you and your future. I promise that I’ll also step outside my individual decisions and add my weight to the forces that shift culture and systems.

Dear Future,

I asked you, the future , to help us as well, to preserve our only planet that can give us life, that can let us watch anime, go to the beach, smell flowers, run through the meadow, listen to our songs, be in a concert, and let us live.

Dear Future Grandchildren,

I hope I can look you in the eye and tell you I honestly did everything I could to protect our planet.

For a child I am yet to know,

We are fighting for a shared cause, inspired by our strong and unwavering dedication to preserve the beauty and wonder of our natural world for our children, our grandchildren and their children, and for countless generations to come.

Dear future generations,

It’s never too late to make a difference. Our actions have very real consequences. We can educate ourselves, learn from our mistakes, and take action. We can hold companies like big oil and big plastic accountable for their negative impacts on the environment. We can educate ourselves and others about what causes climate change and what actions we as individuals can take to lower our carbon footprints.

Dear future me,

I am 19 years old, and I am angry.

Dear Tomorrow,

I am so sorry we didn’t realize this predicament sooner.

Dear Tomorrow,

And, if this summer has taught me anything, I am content (because I have to be) living in this limbo, this seemingly endless waiting for the opportunity to change, when really the opportunity exists within our very selves all along.
