To my future child,

I am sorry for how I have acted in the past – for all the action I haven’t taken, for my apathy, my laziness, my insecurity. I was selfish – and lazy and full of fear. I am also sorry for all the mistakes I will continue to do, even though I try not to. I apologize for the hurt my generation have caused you.

I am changing now I say, and have said many times before, but this time it is true. Right now I am living in the middle of a pandemic, a crisis in which I am as priviliged as I always am. Others are not as priviliged though. You might not be as priviliged.

This crisis is a turning point. If not for the world, then at least for me. I will when this isolation is over stand up – afraid, nervous, uncomfortable – and speak up for real. Stop acting, stop posing. I will join others in their fight. I will organize. I will crave justice. I will try all the ways I can to help create the change necessary. A change that will enable you to not necessarily live the life I live or have lived, but simply to live. Hopefully in a world of equity for every creature and thing. That is at least what I will fight for.

Love, Amanda

More Messages to the Future

Dear Evan,

What has most inspired me to act is wanting to be able to look you in the eye and say, “When I became aware of the existential threat of climate change, I did all I could.”  Despite my pessimism, I act in the hope it can make a difference for future generations and all the precious life on our fragile planet.

Dear Rowan & Tristan,

I promise to do everything I can as a daughter to our great Mother Earth to protect her wildlife and trees.

To my daughter and her children,

As a minister, I have preached that we are here to be of service to others and to be care takers of this wonderful planet that God has given us.

Dear Future Self,

I hope you got your dream job of using your business degree to reduce co2 emissions and promote sustainable energy.

Dear Future Family,

As I’m sitting here trying to think of the best words to say to you all, I am thinking of one major thing: that I can only hope that you all get to experience the incredible beauty created by our planet.

To My Future Child(ren),

The fact that you are reading this means that you would know the answer to a question that has kept me up at night more often than I would like to admit: Did I make you proud?

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to purchase carbon offsets when we fly.

Dear Tomorrow,

My climate promise is to stop using electricity too much.

To My Dear Grandchildren,

Be assured that in the upcoming election, I will cast my vote for your future – for elected officials that recognize climate risks and are willing to promote and vote for legislation that will stop environmental damage and begin to heal our planet.

Dear Tom and Leena,

I want you to only see the beauty in this world; there is so much of it and I will protect this beauty for as long as I am here on this Earth.

dear earth,

I promise those who walked the Earth before me and those who will walk the Earth after me that I will not stand by and let nature slip through my fingers.

Dear future generations,

Past generations took all the trees, polluted all the water, fished all the fish, and hunted all the animals so that there’s almost nothing nice left.
