Dear Leia and her future children,

I am writing to you all in the year of 2017 – when the consequences of climate change have really took a turn in and around the country we live in.

Leia: I am not a perfect mama, nor will I ever be, but I will continue to try my best to teach you everything that will make you a stronger little lady. Even though you’re three (and will be four next month), I have been teaching you the little things that help preserve the Earth we live in. I absolutely love watching you distinguish what needs to go in the trash bin and what needs to go in the recycle bin. Whenever we’re out and about, you’ll squeak out, “Hey! That’s not okay, why did someone do that?” towards the litter on the ground. You always pick it up and throw it away before I am able to say anything else, and you’ll naturally pick it up without mentioning anything in the first place. There are so many more things that we can do together to help our Earth from the damage that has been done, and I am so excited to teach you.

As you already know (by the time you are able to read this), Popo taught me from a young age to conserve everything that we use, so it is in my nature to naturally teach you as well. I am more than positive she has given her two cents about things you may have done to our Earth. Everything she taught me has been engrained in my brain, and – as you may have noticed – I cringe every time I see people wasting things right in front of my eyes. It is a habit for me, and part of my lifestyle to be so conscious about what I do that affects our Earth. Knowing the sweet girl you are, I know you will educate others on what I have taught you.

Future grandchildren: I do not know what kind of world you live in right now, but I am more than confident that your mother has raised you all to be aware of the Earth and how you all affect it. If I am still around (which hopefully I will be), I will definitely be getting on your backs about it!  It does not take much effort to modify our lifestyles for the better of the planet we live on. I’m finishing my letter to you all in such an emotional state – didn’t really expect myself to get so emotional from this. We were given such a beautiful Earth to live on, so there is no reason why we should not take care of it.

Love,

Lynna

More Messages to the Future

Dear me,

Remember how passionate you felt at 20, I hope you keep that passion in you and are still working on climate 30 years from now.

To My Grandchildren,

It’s my hope that the following will be helpful as you navigate your futures.  These are the confessions of a climate activist:

Dear Future Earth,

I promise to promote the growth of clean energy, like solar… For the sake of my grandchildren.

Dear Alyssa,

I pray that more and more fathers will realize that to love their children well, they have to love and respect the ecological systems around them too.

Dear future self,

I am writing this to keep myself accountable and push myself towards taking action towards a sustainable future. I hope children of the future can still appreciate the wonders that nature and all its beings have to offer, appreciate the beauty in the world around us.

Dear Future Grandchildren,

I hope I can look you in the eye and tell you I honestly did everything I could to protect our planet.

Dearest Finlay,

I hope you are healthy and happy and that you feel supported by the ecosystem around you because we are all deeply truly interconnected. We depend on the earth to take care of us, and nature needs us to take care of her in turn. We all need each other.

Dear fellow human,

May my tomorrow include more attention to these details so that you know that I do care.

Dear Tomorrow,

I’ll buy only food that I plan to eat before it spoils.

Dear Rowan and Anaka,

If we could talk, I would not be able to bear your gaze as you ask: How could you, the people in a position to change the course of climate change, fail to act?

Dear Tomorrow,

The transformation of human consciousness

Dear Logan,

I am working every second of my life, with every ounce of my being, to ensure that I am leaving you and your brother a planet that is safe and secure.
