To my beautiful boy,

Today is world oceans day. I will never forget the first time I felt you flutter in my tummy was when I landed in Sydney off a flight from Amsterdam and took you swimming in the ocean. We lived in Bondi and while you grew, we took walks together along the Bondi to Bronte coastal track. I would talk to you as we smelt the saltwater together. You made me excited about the future. I worked at Taronga Zoo helping the team build an Institute of Science and Learning for future generations. Your papa visited from Amsterdam and we travelled to Tasmania and swam lots in the ocean. You love swimming in the ocean. I missed my Greenpeace family, who are also your family – Warriors of the Rainbow. They are strong like you.

Already at 3 years old you point out plastic in the canal, you want to make a difference and I know you will. We have no other choice. The clock is ticking. The Arctic is melting, cities are growing, nature is receding, wildlife is suffering, our oceans are choking. But people are mobilising. And from little things, big things will grow.

I hope the world will change and you will be part of the solution – renewable energy, flourishing forests, plastic free seas, simple living – bikes, films, art, fun.

I promise not to eat animals, to fight for a fair and green future for everyone. To build diverse and daring communities of good folk making the world and better place. And, most of all, I promise to love you forever.

The clock is ticking. The Arctic is melting, cities are growing, nature is receding, wildlife is suffering, our oceans are choking. But people are mobilising. And from little things, big things will grow.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Future Family,

As I’m sitting here trying to think of the best words to say to you all, I am thinking of one major thing: that I can only hope that you all get to experience the incredible beauty created by our planet.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will take short showers, eat less meat, and buy local more often.

Dear Tomorrow

I hope that environmental issues are a thing of the past.

My Mini & Lou,

Since I first sat down with these words, a pandemic has erupted. Racial violence is reaching a fever pitch and protests are raging across the nation. It feels like the planet is succumbing to entropy, slipping further into chaos. But I write to you from a time of shifting tides.

Querida Emanoely,

Gostaria que você se lembrasse das lições simples que mamãe e papai te ensinou, como cuidar das plantas e dos espaços coletivos.

Dear future me,

I am 19 years old, and I am angry.

Son,

Make the most of every day because remember yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will encourage everyone to adopt a plant-based diet. Good for our health, the animals and the planet.

I promise to take shorter showers.

Dear Tomorrow,

The transformation of human consciousness

Dear Spike, Loulou and Yoshua,

I’m going to start a campaign to try to convince everybody in the Netherlands to not eat meat one day a week.

Dear Son,

I hope with effective action to combat this climate change will we have a better world in the future.
