To humanity in the 22nd century,

How are you? Are humans still torturing the earth? Are they still capitalizing on everything for the sake of money and not considering how the future generations are going to live in this catastrophe? Are they still oblivious that not only big corporates and governments, but their own everyday actions will affect the future of humanity dramatically? Are they still considering -or in the process of- moving to Mars instead of taking care of their own home, their own planet they were born in? I have a lot of questions; however, at the same time a lot of hope that humanity is stepping in the right direction, by not only advocating about conserving our planet to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide from big corporates, but also by changing their small habits for the better. Habits that I myself have been trying to incorporate into my life, including cutting back my waste by repairing and reusing clothes and avoiding throwing away food, using energy wisely, and using less plastic to lower my carbon footprint. Even if no one will answer my questions, I would like to think that humanity will become aware of the problems we are causing and quickly step up and take action.

Sincerely,

Your 21st century human.

More Messages to the Future

To the future generations,

I will stand on the streets, in the courts, and in the schools to encourage awareness and empathy for the earth.

To my sons,

I’m voting with climate change as a top priority. I’ve tried to teach you boys that we need to clean up after ourselves and take care of the earth. I promise to continue doing these actions and more, for your sake.

To my beloved granddaughters, Margaret and Caroline,

Growing up in Germany, I often wondered what my parents had done to oppose the Nazi regime in the 1930’s that led to WWII.  I was so disappointed when I found out how passive they had been. For me, this was formative.

Dear Me of 2050,

I promise that I will plant more trees in places where there are none.

Dear future love,

A culture of consumption is the reason that my world faces such an ecological crisis, it is both necessary and proper to address the fundamental mindsets that have created such a destructive culture.

To our sweet grandson Caleb,

We want a safe and beautiful world for you, little Caleb, and for your children and grandchildren. We promise to do our part.

Dear fellow human,

May my tomorrow include more attention to these details so that you know that I do care.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to live a car-free lifestyle.

Dear Finn and Cy,

I think a lot about what you might be like when you grow up and about what kind of world you will live in.

Dear future generations,

Young people are making a lot of noise and politicians are now listening.

Dear… Parents,

Let us teach our children to volunteer and donate.

Dear Students,

My act of love will be to use all the power I have, during the rest of my life, to stop climate change.
