My dearest grandbaby boy Everett,

03/02/2017

My Sierra Club Magazine had an article which suggested we write our kids about what we think about climate change:

Life on earth is going to change. The climate has been warming and changing since I was born. I have been aware that people are contributing to this change by releasing more carbon dioxide into the air because we use sequestered (stored) carbon for energy. There are more and more people needing more and more energy for food, transportation, homes, and a consuming lifestyle.

It has been a big concern for me. I think about it a lot and have tried to do some things to help. At my house, I have put in solar panels for electricty and solar panels to heat water. This is called clean energy. I contribute to organizations for the environment and for family planning education. I have ordered an electric car. I try to pool my trips so that I am going for many different errands on one trip. Also, I ride my bicycle sometimes to meetings or shopping. I travel less and recycle more.

I want to leave a world that is good for you. I am thinking of where would be a good place so that you can have food and water. You also need a place to feel safe and a place were you can grow and feel good.

It is important to know what is going on in the world. It is important to keep in balance what we know and how we treat each other. I pray for wisdom for me and for you.

I Love You!

Your Tutu,
Sharon

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to put in a rain catcher tank.

Dear Soren,

In this world that is changing before our eyes, I believe that is our task: standing unflinchingly on the side of love, connecting with others, and forging ahead together.

Dear Alyssa,

I pray that more and more fathers will realize that to love their children well, they have to love and respect the ecological systems around them too.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to change the culture of my school.

To the generation after mine,

But when you encounter that resistance–and you will, regularly–know that you must respond just how we have had to these past 50 years. With love, and sternness, and most of all, courage. Because that is what the resistance fears the most. We who came before you promise that we will do the same while we wait for you. Know that you will never be alone.

Querido amanhã,

Sempre é bom ajudar a natureza.

Dear Zhengqing Gao,

Fortunately, you didn’t get injured while the wildfire burned your school.

Querida Tainah,

Quero que você beba água pura, coma alimentos sem agrotóxicos e que sua casinha branca com varanda, seja voltada para o leste, onde o sol vai nascer.

My dear granddaughter Christy,

My own curiosity and knowing what a caring, aware young woman you are help me override despair.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to drive less and walk more.

Hi buddy,

I can now see that the solutions are there, that a transition of the magnitude that is needed, is possible.

Dear Beloved Children,

As time progresses, there is hope that value will be placed on all living organisms, including humans, plants, and animals. Life will move at a slower pace, and being on your own time and moving at your individual pace will be the typical way of life. I consider this way of life good living, and I hope that future generations will live on this earth as it was once intended to live in peace and harmony.
