My Dear Children,

If you’re reading this, you are lucky. Lucky for the most part, to be healthy and alive on this planet. I just wanted to let you know that this letter is being written in the month of April 2019. Winter came late this year and is taking longer to go away. We also have had 3 Christmas holidays without snow. Last summer while I was working, we had multiple heat waves and it was unbearable to go outside and even inhale the air because it was so humid. You all may wonder what I’m trying to get at here, but…kids…I want to let you all know that at this exact moment the world is in danger. The climate is changing rapidly not just because of us humans but a good percentage of us are the cause of this mess. We human beings are important representations of the rest of the world and many of us pollute and don’t take enough care of the planet. I know I may have told you this a hundred times, but this letter is important and I want you to pass it on to your children and to theirs. There are simple tasks we can do to keep the earth green and beautiful. Please buy less plastic, recycle and don’t throw recyclables into the garbage. Drive at a slower speed to keep fewer levels of Carbon Dioxide in the air, or even invest in an electric car if you can afford it. Pick up garbage that you see laying anywhere. These little things can do so much. Not just doing but speaking and telling people how you feel about the climate is the most important part, because you may never be alone. Just remember, that you represent everyone else around you…I will do better and I want you both to do the same. I want you both to go to college, university and then get yourself your own home and family and most importantly… I want you to live…I love all very much…and if for some reason you don’t receive this letter, I just wanted to say…I’m sorry for letting you down.

Love, Mom.

More Messages to the Future

To my beloved granddaughters, Margaret and Caroline,

Growing up in Germany, I often wondered what my parents had done to oppose the Nazi regime in the 1930’s that led to WWII.  I was so disappointed when I found out how passive they had been. For me, this was formative.

Dear Hailey and Lily,

We know about this. If we don’t fix this for you, it’s our fault.

My darlings, Juno & Vaeda,

You ask insightful questions, and together we learn about the mysterious world we inhabit.

To my precious children,

As you’ve grown older, I’ve become increasingly aware that protecting you means more than ensuring your short-term safety. It also means ensuring that you’ll have a safe planet to live on.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to change the culture of my school.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to put in a rain catcher tank.

Dear people of The Future,

Thank you for reading. Do your part to save the globe.

dear future people (:

I hope that people are still enjoying the wonders that nature has to offer.

Fe,

As one push of a button can set a spinner in motion, so too can the actions of one in creating a world that allows you to thrive, to giggle, to love.

Dear Son,

I hope with effective action to combat this climate change will we have a better world in the future.

Dear Jack,

Right now you are only a little over 5 weeks old, but you have truly changed my whole world. Your Mom and I always say that we thought we loved before you were born, but now that you have come into the world and we met you, our ability to love just expanded exponentially.

Dear Great Grandchildren,

If you are reading this, you probably inherited my fascination with ancestry, and the way it uncovers incredible stories of unlikely survival.
