Ioanna,

You are only 8 months old but already you are curious about, excited for, amazed by and in charge of the world around you. Every week, I’m startled by how much you understand. I know it won’t be long before you ask me about the planet – how big it is, where it came from, where it ends, and how it works. I won’t have all the answers — I might not even have a tenth of them. But I promise you, we’ll find out together. And when you ask me about what we did about climate change before you were born, I don’t want to disappoint you — because I knew. We knew. I’m ashamed of how we’re managing climate change now, but how about this? If you push me and I push you, we can both make sure that by the time you’re my age, you’re proud to tell your daughter how we fought back together – and did everything we could (and more!) to make the world better for her.

Love you always,
mama

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to ask five of my friends to plant trees.

Dear Future Me,

I hope that when we look back on these years,  you’ll see that humanity can be good. That we joined together and fixed it because of we don’t, who will?

To our sweet grandson Caleb,

We want a safe and beautiful world for you, little Caleb, and for your children and grandchildren. We promise to do our part.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to reach out to more people to ditch driving and consider using public transportation. I promise to convince Marin markets that sensible policies in density and mixed use planning will further enhance everyone’s quality of life.

Dear Seamus and Tuva,

So it’s 2050. If the good people are winning the greater struggle, fossil fuels are a shamefully long chapter of the past, and there has been a full scale awakening to the need for only renewable, clean energy.

Meus filhos,

Devemos conservar nosso planeta.

Dear Child,

Hope we get to have that snowball fight I always dreamed we’d have.

To my children,

I hope that the fervor that is building continues to build and spread and that the world has made progress to minimize the effects of our past actions.

Dear Tomorrow,

We only have 11 years left until the damage done by climate change is irreversible.

Dear Corey,

I promise to do all within my power to create a world that’s safe for you and your generation.

To my great-great grandchildren,

I don’t know your name
or even if you’re alive,
but I’m doing all I can
to make sure you survive.

I’m your great- great grandmother
who lived a century ago
in a world far different
from the one you must know.
