And I know life more fully because of you whom I live on through.

For my most dear and only daughter,

The thought came to me recently – as we were talking about the intersection of slavery and sexism and whether Thomas Jefferson should be labelled a rapist (we really do tackle the big topics on our morning walks to school !) – that you are my future. That I was born simply so that you could be born. I see you as your own young woman in your early teen years. Entirely you, but also me.  And as we wished each other a good day I wondered if all parents might not also feel similarly. We live on in the world. It matters very much how we live now. What we love, whom we impact and whether we laugh. And so today we judge a man a rapist slaveholder who was once considered a man honorable enough to be president. Our standards are changing as we awaken to broader ethical impact. No doubt you will judge inaction on climate change in much the same way we wonder about slaveholders. You will look back at the gentility of our horrible actions too, addicted as we are to fossil fuel living. Holding the Earth as a slave to be raped while obliviously considering ourselves honorable. Just like Thomas Jefferson. But your generation of young women is awake to deeper truths. And living from that truth will bring about change. As once we ended slavery, we will end the ugly way we pillage Mother Earth. Not through civil war but through gentle righteousness. I so admire your gentle passion for truth. And I am grateful to have been your mom. For life itself is the greatest blessing we have.  And I know life more fully because of you whom I live on through.

More Messages to the Future

Querida Futuro Yo,

Quiero que puedas decirme que lo hemos logrado, y que el mundo hoy es un poquito mejor porque nosotras pusimos de nuestra parte.

Dear loved ones in the future,

Even if it pains me to imagine how things are back home in Puerto Rico at the moment, I know things will flourish again. The land will heal, but we need to help it.

Dear Tomorrow,

I will stop using plastic and will plant trees. I will also not waste water and electricity.

To My Future Children,

Most importantly, I hope you live in a world where science is taken seriously and fact is clearly distinguished from fiction.

Dear friends,

Rather than exploit it, destroy it, poison it, why don’t we just enhance the beauty of it, guard it, and love it?

Queridos amigos sobrevivientes.

Quiero pensar que ustedes serán la diferencia, que tomaran más actos sobre el asunto y no dejaran que nada los detenga.

Dear Tomorrow

I promise to educate others TODAY.

Dear Tom and Leena,

I want you to only see the beauty in this world; there is so much of it and I will protect this beauty for as long as I am here on this Earth.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to never use a plastic straw.

Dear Maya, Emilio and Daniel,

We thought that the world was an endless supply of whatever we wanted… I know it sounds hard to believe, but that is the way it was.

Dear tomorrow,

If there’s one thing young people have learned while quarantining, it’s that Gen Z holds so much power and is capable of a lot more than we think. We’ve created a community that has united us all and started to bring about change for the good of our futures. Now, with the help of Gen Z (and of course, people of all ages), we have the power to save our home, the Earth.

Caro Giovanni,

Dobbiamo aiutare nel conservare il bello che c’è nel nostro pianeta.
