Dear youngsters,

Right now, times are tough on the ecological front. A decreasingly conscious capitalistic world once again is forced to come to terms with the consequences of our overbearing and destructive consumption habits. Each day I watch as humanity slowly, tastelessly inches itself ever closer to its own grisly end, willfully ignorant, exploiting the natural bounty of the Earth with little real regard for contingencies.

It is only now that I am writing this letter that the absolutely colossal scale of my hypocrisy shines through to me. I bought into typical consumerist greed just as well as everybody else. I practiced ineffective, half-hearted “activism” by complaining about actions that I didn’t particularly like on social media and about administrations that failed to take the necessary actions to try and preserve our planet, while doing practically nothing to bring forth this change myself, and for that, I am tentatively sorry.

I say “tentatively,” however, because I am optimistic about the ability of myself and others to change. My life has taught me never to bet against the ingenuity and willpower of humanity when put in a difficult position, and the catastrophic stakes of this endeavor seem to fit the bill perfectly. Frankly, I quite like the idea of living people, so I intend to do whatever I possibly can to make sure that we can reach the sweet ambrosia of equilibrium, and hopefully by the end of it all, there will be no need for apologies whatsoever.

So good luck to everyone, I suppose. Let’s right this ship.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Llewyn, beloved grandson …

I can only say that I devoted myself to doing as much as I could to make it better, to provide for a just transition, and to fight those forces that continued to exploit the Eaarth with extractive methods, methods that always also included oppressing some people–because those doing the oppression believed that they were better and deserved more.

Dear Kids of the Future,

My wish for all of you is that the people of the present wake up and are able to change their habits.

BATMAN SAYS, “LISTEN!”

How can I help you save the world and our country?

Dear Alex and Vivian,

This is my most important work.

Son,

Make the most of every day because remember yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to use a water bottle.

Dear girls,

I love you and I care deeply about your future.

My darling Cassidy,

I know I need to write this to you, and I don’t want to because it makes me so sad. I have been desperately avoiding my feelings about climate change, for many years, but especially and with greater intensity every year since you were born.

To My Dear Children, Jackson Carlo and Stella Jane,

I am a better person because of you, and I want the world to be a better place for you.

Dear Samuel, Willa, and Ben,

To the core of my being, and only through the power of community, I will honor the voices of the youth who are pleading, “Don’t burn my future.” Samuel, Willa, and Ben, your little voices I know, will join that chorus soon enough.

To My Daughter and Future Grandchildren,

There are so many more things that we can do together to help our Earth from the damage that has been done, and I am so excited to teach you.

Dear Tomorrow,

My climate promise is to use a refillable bottle, bring my own resusable spoon/form wherever I go, use clean personal care products (without chemicals).
