Dear Whoever’s Still Alive to Read This,

Hey there from the year 2020. Yes, 2020. And yes, it’s as bad as they say it was. Being stuck in the middle of the global pandemic wasn’t exactly how I intended on spending the first year of the roaring ’20s, but here we are. The decade isn’t the only thing roaring though; the alarms warning us about climate change are getting louder and louder, but unfortunately, it’s as though those in charge keep hitting the snooze button. Our public officials seem too worried about lobbyists and keeping their pockets full than filling the stomachs of people who are dying of starvation due to the droughts and destruction that climate change brings. I live in South Florida, and it genuinely scares me that our beautiful region could be a modern Atlantis in a few decades. I worry about my children’s future, and whether or not they’ll even have one because if we keep pillaging the earth at this rate, there’s not going to be an earth left. I really hope you all didn’t recreate Wall-E and escape to the stars in order to avoid fixing the problems your ancestors created, but I can’t say I’d blame you all for it. I’m so sorry in advance that we hadn’t done more to save our planet; I know plenty of people who care about it (me being one of them), but unfortunately, the world has developed an attitude of apathy and indifference towards saving the planet. I just hope you all haven’t done the same. I hope things are better.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow

I promise to educate others TODAY.

Fe,

As one push of a button can set a spinner in motion, so too can the actions of one in creating a world that allows you to thrive, to giggle, to love.

Dear Emilia and Tommy,

We, in our time, still have the chance to change course. We have the knowledge and emergent means, even the profitable technologies, to do so.

To my darling ones,

And it’s not that I don’t care. I care deeply. For you three, and the families I hope you will have one day; for the many beautiful places I have had the privilege to know, places which take my breath away, that fill my heart with a bursting joy and connectedness to something so much greater than I, places I know may be quite different when you are my age

Dear sons,

I’ve been so busy since 2012 working towards getting a price on carbon.

Dear tomorrow,

Unfortunately, our selfishness and excessive greed have closed our eyes to the well-being of the planet, and it has suffered the consequences.

The gift for next generation,

To save the big world, perhaps, we should change the mind from myself to my small family to my community.

Dear grandkids,

I believe this fusion of ecology and economy backed by the digital technology is our great achievement.

Dear Future,

I hope that things have cooled down. I hope that people and governments have come together to save our earth. I hope that everyone is able to breath clean air, drink clean water and see the beauty in nature that I do. I promise to do my best to take part in repairing the damage we’ve done so that my hopes may come true.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will convince my family to switch their gas appliances to electric.

Dear Soren,

In this world that is changing before our eyes, I believe that is our task: standing unflinchingly on the side of love, connecting with others, and forging ahead together.

Dear Gorasia descendants,

I will do all that I can, and hope my fellow inhabitants join my pursuit, to nurture this planet.
