Dear tomorrow’s me and to anyone who may read,

Although 2020 has been a wild year, we must never forget that small choices and changes can collectively lead to a profound positive effect on the future. With global climate change posing a huge threat for the future, we must remember to make decisions that benefit the long-term. Buy LEDs instead of fluorescent bulbs. Watch TV in one room. Reduce the amount of electricity we use. Buy local produce and fewer processed foods.

I hope that the government is able to finally make a movement away from oil and fossil fuels and towards renewable energies. If the government is able to enforce better environmental regulations on companies doing huge damage to forests and land, as well as large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions. I hope that someone in power will resist the lobbying of large corporations and actually take steps to save the Earth.

In the future, I promise to be more mindful of the products I buy. To companies, what speaks words better than our money? Buying power of the consumers has the power to change the world. We must demand ethically and locally sourced products that do not exploit the labor and resources of the Earth. I promise to buy fewer processed foods that emit fewer emissions. I promise to be mindful of the amount of time I spend watching TV and driving unnecessarily short distances. I promise to put in the effort to find out where my food is coming from, rather than just automatically buying the cheapest items.

More Messages to the Future

For those who come after us,

This is for the countless children I already see suffering the impact of climate change around the world, and the generations to follow.

My darling Cassidy,

I know I need to write this to you, and I don’t want to because it makes me so sad. I have been desperately avoiding my feelings about climate change, for many years, but especially and with greater intensity every year since you were born.

I promise to plant trees and to turn off the lights.

Dear Annie and Eric,

I hope that this life of good things is not just yours to enjoy, but that you also have decided to fight for others to have this life, too.

To My Daughter and Future Grandchildren,

There are so many more things that we can do together to help our Earth from the damage that has been done, and I am so excited to teach you.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will encourage everyone to get OUT of their cars and onto public transit.

Dear Children,

I wish I had a crystal ball and could peep into it to see you all happy and safe in a world that nourishes you and that is also nourished by you, a world where the resources it provides are as valued as the people in it and not frittered away by greed and power.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to live a car-free lifestyle.

Anya,

All you can do is your best. You can encourage the same in others. You can admit your mistakes and those of your ancestors. You can learn from them, and help however you can. I’ll do the same. I promise.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will eat vegan, organic, locally grown, and seasonal.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to take my bike everywhere. Taking Golden Gate Transit to SF tonight.

To my future children,

I am doing everything I can because I want the footprint that I leave behind to be my feet in the sand on a beach and not a carbon one.
