Dear Tomorrow,

It pains me to know that a planet which has stood strong for almost 5 billions years is finally reaching its limit. It pains me to know that future generations will be unable to experience the joys of earth which I once able to. It pains me to know that us humans are at fault for the monster we have created. However, it inspires me to know that awareness is finally being brought to an issue that was ignored for far too long. You may ask, is it too late? Too difficult? Simply impossible? It is never too late or too difficult if you truly care about the well-being of this planet. I have grown up in a generation that is just beginning to realize the consequences of their actions. The responsibility of mending our planet falls heavily on you and for that I apologize. However, I know that this next generation is the most equipped of us all. Learn from our mistakes and be the change that we could never be. While I will try my best to change the course of our planets future in my lifetime, I know the battle will continue on long after I am gone. It may never be over and with that it is time to accept we will never reach a state of pristine nature that existed millions of years ago. It is important to adapt with the ideals of society; no real change can be made if we are too ignorant to realize what humans really want out of life. Accept what we have become and don’t dwell on it, be the change that you want to see. Life is too short to have the mindset that you or your ideas are not enough. The most important thing is to maintain hope, because without it a goodbye may be in our near future.

Best,
Katherine Johnson
