Dear Tomorrow,

I’m writing this message with one hand. With the other hand, I’m holding our 9–month–old son who fell asleep a few minutes ago.

I know a bit about how our individual day–to–day actions and how government policies are leading us and the earth down an irreversible path. I try to use a bit less energy but that’s about all I do. I don’t change my research topics or actively engage in advocacy work or make more substantial daily changes to what I eat, how I travel and what I do. Deep inside, I might be believing that this will somehow be solved by technological discoveries. And maybe also thinking what difference could one person make anyways. But so much of it is just laziness and apathy.

So yes, I knew about climate change and how dramatically it’ll affect my son’s and other children’s futures but I don’t do much about it… Sounds bad when I put it this way, doesn’t it…

Dear Tomorrow,

Don’t use plastic straws!

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to pick up trash at every beach I visit, use metal straws, take quick showers.

Dear Seamus and Tuva,

So it’s 2050. If the good people are winning the greater struggle, fossil fuels are a shamefully long chapter of the past, and there has been a full scale awakening to the need for only renewable, clean energy.

Dear Children and Grandchildren,

I see a world full of hope fueled by the desire for change.

Dear Alba:

There is still a lot of beauty and I will do what I can to keep it from slipping away.

To my child,

For the pale blue dot we live on, a precious beauty, I try to help.

To older Rochelle,

You should’ve reduced your carbon footprint, should be using some source of renewable energy and be a vegetarian by now.

Dear Nephew,

I believe i have truly played my part in raising awareness and practical solutions to climate change.

Dear Tomorrow,

I haven’t met you yet, but I already know you deserve a better tomorrow.

Dear Generations to Be,

If we could all slow down, look around and connect: with each other, the Earth, the sky, the plants and rocks and animals, then maybe we can all remember to treat everyone and everything with respect and live in love.

Hi buddy,

I can now see that the solutions are there, that a transition of the magnitude that is needed, is possible.

Dear Lila

So today, my strong and spunky girl, I promise you this: I will stay vigilant and flexible. I will spread the word.
