Dear Tomorrow,

If we are good stewards you will have a world to live in that is better than what we got from our ancestors. I have trouble breathing the air many days here in Seattle, Washington. Most people don’t notice the level of pollution we have, but my lungs do. I hope we’ve fixed that by your time. I hope you have a world with clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and healthy food to eat every day. I hope that in addition to safe human cities you can live in, that the world also has a multitude of different wild places for all the other creatures to live their lives freely and naturally in. I hope the world makes you say “wow” and wonder at its endless complexity and beauty, because that’s how it can be. And I hope that you and your family are free to live in that state of joy and wonder your whole lives.

To my precious children,

As you’ve grown older, I’ve become increasingly aware that protecting you means more than ensuring your short-term safety. It also means ensuring that you’ll have a safe planet to live on.

To the future,

Today, I will hope and envision the future I wish to achieve. Then tomorrow, I will have tough conversations, I will call my local representatives, I will continue to fight for this world.

Dear Daughter,

Even when contemplating huge global-historical issues — especially then — it’s important to stay grounded in the present time and place, the specific here and now, and the minute affairs of everyday interpersonal relations.
