I hope that the state of the environment becomes a part of everyday discourse.

dear tomorrow,

Shawnee National Forest is one of many natural places on our planet that holds a special place in my heart. Hiking these trails have given me purpose in life. Little did I know growing up on the trails of Shawnee that I would one day be working towards a career focused around the protection of these public lands. Before my involvement with an undergraduate education and involvement in the world of conservation, I had no clue about the complexities of our environment–what is at risk and what goes into the creation, maintenance, and protection of the land. However, through this I have learned that right now our environment is under attack.

Global climate change is one of the many factors that are negatively impacting our environment. The existence of the world as I know it is changing rapidly. Weather patterns are changing. Forests are being cleared. Protected lands are being depleted. Biodiversity loss is quickly occuring.

Despite this all, I remain hopeful. It is people like myself, my colleagues, and other environmentalists that give me hope.  There is much ground to cover and much work to be done. Yet I remain optimistic. I hope that the state of the environment becomes a part of everyday discourse. I hope that more and more people begin to understand the importance of protecting our environment.

Though I alone cannot do everything to solve these problems, I will do my best to be an advocate for our environment.  I will continue to educate myself, my family, and my friends. I will live sustainably and thoughtfully. I will continue to pursue my passions.  I will continue to put myself in the path of encounter with the sweet embrace of our environment.

Love,

Annamarie Pas

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to change the culture of my school.

Hey Kiddos!

My hope for you is that all our legislative efforts and care for the environment makes a difference so that we can wipe asthma out of our family.

Dear Beloved Children,

As time progresses, there is hope that value will be placed on all living organisms, including humans, plants, and animals. Life will move at a slower pace, and being on your own time and moving at your individual pace will be the typical way of life. I consider this way of life good living, and I hope that future generations will live on this earth as it was once intended to live in peace and harmony.

Dear Earth,

I will keep the air clean so everyone can see the sunset.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to not waste food and eat locally grown food.

Dear Future Sami Lee,

Everyone currently in life laughs and yells save the bees. We were a bee this year for Halloween and Lucy even came up with a great slogan “get with it honey”.

Our Shared Promise

I will act today so you may have a healthy earth to live on.

To my dearest Gabriel,

What gives me hope is what is yet to come, what you will experience in your lifetime.

Dear Lalo,

I hope whatever happens, whatever I can’t imagine that you may face, that you will continue to seek light.

To My Future Self,

This lead me to my final project, which focused on reforming the education system to incorporate sustainability classes into the current curriculum.

To my future Niece,

While I will work my hardest to create any positive change I can, you must continue this quest. You cannot give up hope, and you must always remember that the beauty on this Earth is worth saving.
