Dear Tara,

I am sitting in a classroom thinking about you. Which is rare for me. I hope that our family has taken some initiative to do something about changing society instead of building robots and large houses. I hope the air of Australia is still known to be the freshest. Animals and plants still flourish in all parts of the land. Exploring and savoring these moments I know you have with your determination to travel. I hope you have a family and go on road trips with them. I am sorry we never could as a family because I know you would’ve loved to.

I hope you have some amazing job that is not just sitting in a chair and typing all day and I do hope the same for me cause we both know that I would be playing some sort of game and I would be 100% addicted. I hope you live in an environmentally friendly house to some extent. I know you have taken on mum’s weird recycling habitats that drive everyone nuts. I hope you don’t have an extra-large red bin and waste food all the time. I hope you cook your own meals every night or someone does.

I promise to make a bigger effort to be sustainable by using less plastic and recycling more. I promise to keep showing up to the Rocklea markets and buy fresh produce instead of buying the soggy frozen stuff. As much as I love my sweet foods that use way too much plastic, I know I need to reduce how much I buy.

I hope our bond is stronger than it is today as I sit in this classroom wondering if you will in fact read this. I hope you are no longer in a pandemic and there is a vaccination for covid-19.

I love you so much even when I don’t show it.

Much love your big sister,
Jessie

More Messages to the Future

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to ditch all the natural gas and go all electric with my home!

Dear Future Earth,

I promise to promote the growth of clean energy, like solar… For the sake of my grandchildren.

Dear tomorrow,

Unfortunately, our selfishness and excessive greed have closed our eyes to the well-being of the planet, and it has suffered the consequences.

My dear granddaughter Christy,

My own curiosity and knowing what a caring, aware young woman you are help me override despair.

Dear Tomorrow,

I’m not allowed to talk about climate change around family; as my mom warned me, “climate change is not something that people think about in Mississippi.” But I’m worried for my family’s future.

To my precious children

I want clean air, clean energy and muddy feet for you. I want this for all children.

I promise to plant more flowers.

Dear Tomorrow,

I will opt up to deep green

Dear future self,

I am writing this to keep myself accountable and push myself towards taking action towards a sustainable future. I hope children of the future can still appreciate the wonders that nature and all its beings have to offer, appreciate the beauty in the world around us.

dear future people (:

I am writing this message to you guys. When I look outside my window today, I see a beautiful world that others and myself call β€œhome sweet home.” The trees glimmering in warm sunlight, the air stirring a cool breeze, and the water flowing down rivers are parts of our home Mother Earth.

To my great-great grandchildren,

I don’t know your name
or even if you’re alive,
but I’m doing all I can
to make sure you survive.

I’m your great- great grandmother
who lived a century ago
in a world far different
from the one you must know.

Dear Tomorrow,

I will do my part to help ensure that there is an Earth left when we are done borrowing it.
