Dear Shiro,

I believe you are well equipped with the know-how of the incidents that occurred in 2020. An unknown pandemic distorted our usual way of life. A highly contagious virus encroached human life, and nations all over the globe closed their borders. Millions were infected, there were recoveries, but the number of deaths was shocking. Factories closed, and a new piece of clothing- the facemask, was suddenly introduced to us. For three months, people had no idea what they were dealing with, and those who treated the situation normally, the virus- COVID-19 treated them abnormally. Factories closed down productions, and in such a short span, millions were rendered jobless.

Several countries struggled and managed to contain the spread, additionally, to mitigate the situation and protect the unknown future, it required leaders with a strong will. Many of these leaders emerged but later coiled in distress. On the other hand, scientists were looked up to; the healthcare workers were in the frontline fighting with an invisible enemy, sacrifices had to be made to control the situation. The pandemic reminded the leaders of their primary work to serve the people and not their selfish interests. Setting up sustainable healthcare facilities was prioritized, and the doctors were regarded as the heroes, unlike previous times where they were seen as just other social workers in the communities they served.

We all look forward to cleaning the earth, free from viruses and crashed healthcare systems. The cases of racism and xenophobic attacks are a dreaded curse that will only hurt everyone in due course. Peace and healthy international relations are the hope of maintaining a clean and sustainable environment. A conducive, green environment for the wildlife and the natural features is what we expect to have in the near future. We wish and hope that such a situation finds you prepared to deal with it in the future.

Dear Evan,

What has most inspired me to act is wanting to be able to look you in the eye and say, ā€œWhen I became aware of the existential threat of climate change, I did all I could.ā€Ā  Despite my pessimism, I act in the hope it can make a difference for future generations and all the precious life on our fragile planet.

Dear loved ones in the future,

Even if it pains me to imagine how things are back home in Puerto Rico at the moment, I know things will flourish again. The land will heal, but we need to help it.

To the future generations,

I hope that you all can enjoy the Smokey Mountains in your lifetime too and that they look how they did back in 2017 when I saw them.

To my future children,

I am doing everything I can because I want the footprint that I leave behind to be my feet in the sand on a beach and not a carbon one.

Dear Students,

I imagine at this point we have dropped our addiction to coal, gas, and oil and that our environment has made a turn for the better with the solar, wind, and other unimagined (at this point) alternative energy choices are in place.

Dear Future Me: Only open after March 4th, 2050

I don’t regret my past ventures, nor do I believe I will regret my future ventures, but I’ve learned that I’ve needed to manifest these experiences into actions of sustainable development and conservation and protection of our environment.

Dear Future Self,

It was 2020, the year I realized that life is fragile—not just mine, but the entire planet—through immense consumption, pollution, greediness, ignorance, false bliss. This wasn’t the way I wanted to live my life, so I promise to actively make the change.
