Dear Robert and Lewis,

Some of my fondest memories of you boys growing up involves reading to you. We read so many books, checked out so many from the library in Columbia, Mo. I read “A Tree for Me” to you, Robert, with tears in my eyes as I worried about the future of the environment. We read about polar bears, Lewis, and I wondered if they would still be living in the Arctic in your lifetime. We read about mountains and field and rivers and oceans and so many animals and plants. And you both always loved stories about trees. You were both early environmentalists because of the books we read together and the discussions that ensued. We picked up trash on our walks, saved soda can tabs, recycled everything we could, rescued worms from the hot pavement after a rain, and never ever killed a bug. I hope that you are continuing to care deeply about our Earth and will pass on your love of the environment to your children. Do all that you can (and then some more) to preseve our world and to make it a peaceful and meaningful place for all.

With much love,

your mother (Marie)

More Messages to the Future

dear future children,

As I write this, our world is slowly giving way to climate change.

To the wonderful children of our family – Elayna, Julianna, and James –

There is no issue more important to your future and your friends’ future than stemming climate change.

Our Promise

I will turn my gas transmission into an electric car!

To what we’ve overcome.

The first step would be in overcoming ourselves. Because whether we end up fading into obscurity, or thriving in prosperity, we will overcome ourselves.

Dear Tomorrow,

My climate promise is to use a refillable bottle, bring my own resusable spoon/form wherever I go, use clean personal care products (without chemicals).

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to sign up for 100% renewable energy.

Dear Daughter,

Even when contemplating huge global-historical issues — especially then — it’s important to stay grounded in the present time and place, the specific here and now, and the minute affairs of everyday interpersonal relations.

To my future Niece,

While I will work my hardest to create any positive change I can, you must continue this quest. You cannot give up hope, and you must always remember that the beauty on this Earth is worth saving.

To My Fellow Two-Spirits,

Thank you — Thank you — without you, I would not hear butterflies singing, without you, I would not understand black bear humor, or the creativity of jays planning their breakfast, without you, I would not feel flora whispers of long-lived wisdom on the back of my neck while sitting in Padmasana.

Dear next generation,

Please don’t wait to see the adverse effects instead adopt that river, stream, lake or ocean to make the world a better place.

Loved One,

That we all have a role to play no matter how small, we all can make a difference.

Para minha querida filha, Vitória,

Consegue compreender que estamos aqui de passagem e que temos por obrigação apenas tomar emprestado, evitado excessos e principalmente agradecer.
