Dear Planet Earth and all your fascinating denizens –

COP26 has just concluded with only moderate successes in a time that urgently requires more than that. So what can I do, as one speck on the planet? 1. Continue to vote, and advocate for climate change solutions at all levels of government. 2. Be an active participant in the local work parties that are improving the health of the forests (bye-bye, invasive ivy!) 3. Plant more native flora in my own garden (hello, pollinators!) 4. Put more effort into transitioning from a vegetarian diet to a vegan diet. 5. Invite neighbors to carpool with me when I head to the grocery store. 6. Walk instead of drive to accomplish more of my nearby errands. 7. As the appliances in my home age out, switch from natural gas to electric options. 8. And take the Talk Climate to Me course for women so I can bring up climate change with my friends without sounding like a sanctimonious crank.

I love you, Planet Earth, truly and deeply!

More Messages to the Future

Dear Rowan and Anaka,

If we could talk, I would not be able to bear your gaze as you ask: How could you, the people in a position to change the course of climate change, fail to act?

To my children,

I hope that the fervor that is building continues to build and spread and that the world has made progress to minimize the effects of our past actions.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise composting in my house and getting an EV for my first car.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to eat less meat.

Dear Maya,

Maya, my love, I promise to be courageous. I promise that when I face a decision, I will think of how it will impact you and your future. I promise that I’ll also step outside my individual decisions and add my weight to the forces that shift culture and systems.

To my Dad,

I hope on this Father’s Day, my 24th birthday, and the rest of days, we remember that the most basic part of life is living happy with the ones we love. Acting every day against climate change will allow us to keep that simple piece of humanity.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will encourage everyone to get OUT of their cars and onto public transit.

Dear Tomorrow,

Awareness is key. Learning about this issue can seem like a small effort compared to other actions, but it’s the most important.

To My Future Nephews,

I want you to see those corn fields in the north, the beautiful beaches down in Florida, and the stars in the woods at night.

Dear People Of The Future,

It’s scary, this is the stuff you see in movies about the end of the world.

Dear my future child,

I promise you, I am going to do everything I can to save this planet for you. I won’t let you down, I swear.

Dear Sadie,

You are young and have a rich future ahead of you. I am retired and aiming for a high quality of cultural life and comfort with whatever time remains to me. I do not want to see a world whose elders sacrifice your future for their short-term needs and personal gain. So it’s up to you and me to speak out.
