Dear My Future Children, Scientists or Not,

No matter what career you may choose to make your own, I ask only that you keep in mind the scientific knowledge you do learn. Learn to take this field, a field that might not make much sense to people at times, and learn to explain it to others in a way that makes sense and makes a difference. It is not about what you learn, but how you use what you learn. Do not ignore science, no matter how often politics may try to swing it in one direction or another, remember that science is objective, it has no political party, no political border, it is something that seeks to benefit us all. Learn to treasure this planet you have and use science to make every effort you can to save it. Hopefully y’all can give the next generation a chance to see the world I do right now. There truly is no price tag on nature, and you or I may never understand how much it is really worth. Stay informed, stay connected, stay scientific. Many thanks and good wishes, and above all, much love for you and this beautiful planet.

More Messages to the Future

Filhota,

Espero de verdade saber contribuir para legá-la inteira para você, e que todos saibamos fazer isso em conjunto também.

Dear Me,

Today, I promise to keep my spaces clean and my environment cleaner.

Dear Potential Future Kiddo,

To think that my choices of sustainable commuting, eating a plant based diet, and working on our City’s zero waste program likely pale in comparison to the impact of not having a baby is nothing short of devastating.  Does it make me a bad environmentalist to honor my maternal instincts?

Dear Tomorrow,

Be the person who shows up. Be the person who continues to advocate for change because change is possible – it is possible in the most partisan of politics.

Dear Son,

I hope with effective action to combat this climate change will we have a better world in the future.

Dear Amara and Uma,

Maybe you heard about bats? Bats, the carriers of this disease that spread among us like wild fire. I love bats. When I was your age today, sitting in the evening on the back terrace of your grandparent’s home in Ibiza, hundreds of bats would play, dance and sing among the trees.

Dear Maya,

Maya, my love, I promise to be courageous. I promise that when I face a decision, I will think of how it will impact you and your future. I promise that I’ll also step outside my individual decisions and add my weight to the forces that shift culture and systems.

Dear Tomorrow,

Love, help and build a future in unison that benefits and protects the whole world.

Dear Lucie,

Lucie, I love you more than you could ever know and I hope that my promises help contribute to a better world for you and inspire you to take action as well as you grow into the amazing adult I know you will be.

Dear Elliot and Alana,

But being truthful, I know we are not yet on the path that will lead to the change that is needed; but it is visible.

Dear Thomas,

When you look at me with those big beautiful eyes and that innocent smile, you make me want to fight harder. And I do.

Dear Children and Grandchildren,

I see a world full of hope fueled by the desire for change.
