Dear Mom,

Looking at the world that we live in, and how things are in this world makes me feel a number of emotions. I have so many fond memories from my childhood that involve playing outside, anything from sledding out on the hill near our house to spending time enjoying the summer time at the beach. I am so grateful that we have gotten the chance to see each beautiful season take place and are able to enjoy the world around us. It makes every holiday and every vacation we share as a family so special and exciting. I’ll never forget walking with you to the beach in the morning, closing our eyes and stopping to listen to the sound of the waves rolling over and over again. It was so peaceful, and in that moment, I felt a deep connection to the world around us.

When I look back at this fond memory and see where the planet is going, I get scared. Scared for the future, scared for the state of our world. The temperatures are changing, and I worry what this could mean for my future children. Will they have fond memories of sledding down a snow covered hill? Will they get the chance to see each season being its own separate entity? Are they going to have a moment of pure peace in nature, like I did with you at the beach all those years ago? I’m not sure. I worry that climate change will keep getting worse and worse, greatly impacting the children of tomorrow; my future children and their future children.

For your future and for mine, I truly hope we won’t be able to feel more of the major effects of climate change. I hope that more people step up, and some changes are made. Hopefully something will happen soon that will cause people to wake up, including the people in our government, and realize that climate change is real, and something needs to be done about it. Whether its people making calls to our representatives to get more legislation in place to stop emissions, or its people making individual changes to reduce our footprint; something needs to happen. I promise to not take our earth for granted, and to appreciate all of the things that the earth has brought us. Thank you mom, for showing me what a beautiful place the earth is, through my memories of outdoor activities from my childhood and the walks that we take, and the fact that you live life to the fullest.

Love, Sarah

More Messages to the Future

Dear Gabriel,

One day ten or twenty years from now, when you look back from the future, you will be able to clearly see the entire path.

To my future children,

It’s not enough to just recycle. I will sign petitions and call my local representatives. I will also engage in conversations about climate change – even with people with whom I don’t see eye-to-eye.

Dear future generations,

Young people are making a lot of noise and politicians are now listening.

My dear daughters,

I will use my voice to help bring awareness about climate change.

Dear Tomorrow-My letter to the future 2030

I am most sorry we could not work through our differences, and see through the greed, get organized, and do more so that you could have a better life in your 2030 future.

Dear Maya, Emilio and Daniel,

We thought that the world was an endless supply of whatever we wanted… I know it sounds hard to believe, but that is the way it was.

Querida Futuro Yo,

Quiero que puedas decirme que lo hemos logrado, y que el mundo hoy es un poquito mejor porque nosotras pusimos de nuestra parte.

To My Future Children,

Most importantly, I hope you live in a world where science is taken seriously and fact is clearly distinguished from fiction.

For my children,

If we haven’t done enough and the world you’re living on is apocalyptic or if you’re living on another planet then I’m deeply sorry and just know that I believe in you and I know that you are both strong and smart enough to handle anything.

to my dearest children,

Our future is being made now, and I promise to do everything in my power to make yours safe.

Dear Anabelle and Bruce,

My desire is for clean air, clean water, rich soil, and healthy nutritious food for you and all children always everywhere.
