I will keep trying Kaydence, I promise. And I hope we can look back together in 2050 and smile, knowing that our Earth is healthy once again.

Dear Kaydence,

Hi Kay Kay,

My beautiful niece. I know you will receive when you are 34 years old, but as of right now it’s 2019 and you’re just a sweet three-year-old with your whole life ahead of you. And what a silly, sassy little thing you are!

So..things aren’t going exactly great with the world at the moment. It seems that every day we are delivered more and more bad news. Violence, dishonesty, hatred, it all seems to be running rampant in society. But even bigger than that, is the issues with our planet. Humans have done a poor job of respecting it for too long, and now we’re in trouble. Global warming is causing the ice sheets to melt. Our home in Florida is predicted to be underwater in only a short period of time. Oceans are acidifying, and coral reefs are dying. Will you even get a chance to go on a snorkeling trip and see their beauty? Hurricanes and all other natural disasters are becoming more and more powerful and destructive. I can’t bear the thought of you having to face such extreme weather conditions. Species are going extinct, our air is polluted, and the health of our planet is but an insignificant thought to those big, money-grabbing corporations. Baby girl, I’m sorry that this is the world you were born into. My only hope is that it’s not the world you grow up in.

I want you to grow up in a place where nature is respected, where a variety of animals and plants flourish in a healthy environment. I want you to breathe clean air, swim in clean oceans, explore an unpolluted Earth. And I’m doing everything in my power to make sure you get those chances.

I’m studying environmental sciences right now in college so that I can join the fight in making the Earth healthy again. I recycle, I save water, and I minimize my carbon footprint as much as I can. One day I hope to join the EPA so I may have a voice on the political side of things as well. Hopefully I can push for some action in that way. I will keep trying Kaydence, I promise. And I hope we can look back together in 2050 and smile, knowing that our Earth is healthy once again.

With love,
Aunt Katie

More Messages to the Future

Dear Thomas,

When you look at me with those big beautiful eyes and that innocent smile, you make me want to fight harder. And I do.

Dear Lucy,

The clock ticks, time passes, and the earth and all of its inhabitants move closer to dangerous boundaries we can dimly discern but cannot see clearly.

Dear Amara and Uma,

Maybe you heard about bats? Bats, the carriers of this disease that spread among us like wild fire. I love bats. When I was your age today, sitting in the evening on the back terrace of your grandparent’s home in Ibiza, hundreds of bats would play, dance and sing among the trees.

Dear Tristan,

I am doing this to protect you, the food, water, air and biodiversity of a country that I love.

Dear Hailey and Lily,

We know about this. If we don’t fix this for you, it’s our fault.

To the Future Generations,

I look at my baby niece today. The newest member of our family, just 3 days old. What will be left for her and her grandchildren?

Dear Hannah, Harper and future baby of Ryan and Colleen Lane,

I will not stop fighting for a more sustainable future, your future.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I’ll replace our lights with LED lights.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise I will use less fossil fuels.

To My Fellow Two-Spirits,

Thank you — Thank you — without you, I would not hear butterflies singing, without you, I would not understand black bear humor, or the creativity of jays planning their breakfast, without you, I would not feel flora whispers of long-lived wisdom on the back of my neck while sitting in Padmasana.

Our Promise

I will turn my gas transmission into an electric car!

Dear future generations,

I pledge to you now that I will work tirelessly and with all my willpower so you don’t have to live in a world where you have to worry about the next storm.
