Dear Grandchildren — August and any others who were born after him

Way back in 2020 I was 72 years old and Grampa Gary and I lives right next to the Pacific Ocean. We wanted the ocean along with all the aspects of Earth to be clean and filled with life. I worked on films (videos actually, but we still called them films) and wrote books and gave talks to help people remember how precious life is and how connected we all are. I changed my way of living to consume less, waste less, use less fuel, and live in peace will all the life (human and otherwise) that surrounded me. I hoped and prayed that what I was doing would make a difference. I joined millions of other people who wrote letters and made calls urging our leaders to do more to care for the planet. Back then we still acted like war was necessary, buying tons of stuff was common, and humans were the smartest life forms. Ha ha. Boy were we wrong! As you know, there is no need for war or hunger or poverty. There is enough for everyone if we are smart and loving in the way we live. I was part of the Harmony Squad (also known as the Elders Action Network) and this enabled me to meet with others who shared my beliefs. Now, all these years later, I hope you will remember your Grandma Nancy as someone who did her best to work for your future — your life. I hope it is a happy one!

More Messages to the Future

To my sons,

I’m voting with climate change as a top priority. I’ve tried to teach you boys that we need to clean up after ourselves and take care of the earth. I promise to continue doing these actions and more, for your sake.

People of tomorrow,

Your path will only be as clear tomorrow as we have made it for you today.

To my unborn children, hey it’s mummy Cris here!

I am witnessing climate change in a way that I do not like, and I do not know how can I stop it.

Jeremy M,

My promise is to work to protest carbon emissions.

Dear Eleanor,

You are so small. So innocent. So beautiful. For you and for everyone else, I will try harder.

Isabelle minha querida neta!

Nossa vida só tem qualidade se tem natureza ao nosso redor.

I pledge to stop using plastic bags.

Dear Potential Future Kiddo,

To think that my choices of sustainable commuting, eating a plant based diet, and working on our City’s zero waste program likely pale in comparison to the impact of not having a baby is nothing short of devastating.  Does it make me a bad environmentalist to honor my maternal instincts?

Dear Tomorrow

I will teach my children about a greener earth.

To My Children and My Future Grandchildren,

People are an amazing race and, if we have the will, I believe we have the ingenuity and resources to fix the harm we’ve done.

To my dear children in the year 2050,

I don’t wish to go backwards, but I do wish we would slow down and design our brave new world with more care.

Dear Tomorrow,

I will encourage composting at work.
