Dear Future World,

I hope you all, we all have learned. Right now its 2020 and the world is in shambles. We have not prioritized our environment despite the warnings that we are running out of time to do so. Despite there being a global pandemic, the administration in the United States is trying to roll back so many of the policies people have spent years fighting for. I hope we’re doing less fighting now. I hope we have placed an importance on keeping the environment clean, clear, and cool. I hope we have invented new technologies (or thought of ways to use the old ones) to help us live lives that promote a future for everyone, not continuing to live in ways that drastically and negatively impact the world. It was just the 50th anniversary of the very first Earth day a couple of weeks ago. I, at 20, learned so much about the history and importance of this day. I hope that by now everyone understands the magnitude of the sentiments behind Earth day and that we are continuing to carry those ideas at the forefront of the decisions we make. I guess all I can say is I hope we have realized that no other decisions that are made will matter if the Earth is not put first.
All my best,
Mary

More Messages to the Future

Dear Emilia and Tommy,

We, in our time, still have the chance to change course. We have the knowledge and emergent means, even the profitable technologies, to do so.

Dear Alba:

There is still a lot of beauty and I will do what I can to keep it from slipping away.

Dear Future Afnan,

You should make a time machine and come back to past and solve all the problems.

Dear Kai and Leah,

I want you to feel awestruck like I do. It is important to feel small sometimes, to feel the weight of reality, to recognize the scale of a challenge, to see where you fit and what you are up against. This is the case with climate change.

Dear Rosie,

But when you are reading this years from now, by the light of a solar powered lamp, know that your dad, mom and millions of others who burned brightly with love for our kids did what we could, when we knew the stakes.

Dear loved ones in the future,

Even if it pains me to imagine how things are back home in Puerto Rico at the moment, I know things will flourish again. The land will heal, but we need to help it.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to pick up trash at every beach I visit 🙂 and to bike for local errands.

Pour ma famille,

Il faut trouver le 7ème sens et se battre pour des causes justes, comme l´amour et la liberté.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to only use metal straws and reusable cups.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to work with my family and neighbors to reduce carbon output.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to live a car-free lifestyle.

Dear Tomorrow,

Don’t use plastic straws!
