Dear Future Self,

How’s the middle aged life going? As a 19 year old, I can hardly imagine what it’ll be like when I turn 48 in 2050. I’m sure by then I’ll have witnessed and experienced so much. I will have went through college, gotten a career, made friends, memories, maybe fallen in love…my head spins with all the possibilities.

I’m sure I’ll have also seen the climate crisis worsen and lived through a number of increasing problems stemming from it. This is where I worry. How bad will it be by then? Will where I live now be habitable? Will my loved ones and I have enough food and water? Will society work together to solve any of this? …Will there even be a society left? There are too many questions and they are too terrifying to ponder for long.

I hope that despite all of this, I can find happiness and meaning in my life. I hope things won’t be as apocalyptic as I am currently imagining. I hope I’ll find reasons to have hope at all, as right now I do not have much of it. If you’re reading this in 2050, do me a favor and make the world as good a place as you can for yourself and others, no matter how everything is holding up. I am so happy to have gotten the opportunity to experience life and its pleasures, so experience as much of it as you can even in 2050. Even if climate change ruins a lot, there is always something to fight for.

Thanks for sticking through to this point, and hopefully for many years after.

More Messages to the Future

Caro Giovanni,

Dobbiamo aiutare nel conservare il bello che c’è nel nostro pianeta.

My darlings, Juno & Vaeda,

You ask insightful questions, and together we learn about the mysterious world we inhabit.

To my precious children,

As you’ve grown older, I’ve become increasingly aware that protecting you means more than ensuring your short-term safety. It also means ensuring that you’ll have a safe planet to live on.

To my dear son Zac,

I promise to raise you as a loving-nature human.

Dear Matthew, Sam, and Sophie,

There is a promise in the Bible: ‘I shall restore the years that the locusts have eaten’ and that points to a promise of complete healing and restoration. But until that comes I intend to do my best to ‘save the planet’ in whatever way I can, and I encourage you to do the same.

To My Future Children,

I hope by 2050, our society has taken initiative to be producing energy solely through renewable sources.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to buy organic food and run more and bike more! (I could use the exercise.)

Dear Rosie,

But when you are reading this years from now, by the light of a solar powered lamp, know that your dad, mom and millions of others who burned brightly with love for our kids did what we could, when we knew the stakes.

Dear Society,

If we work together to spread the awareness of what is occurring today, we will be able to prevent it from continuing into the tomorrow.

Dear Kids,

My mistake was thinking I needed to give you more to be a good Mom. Recently your aunt asked me what my favorite toy was growing up. I gulped, I didn’t have one- it was the outdoors, sliding down a ravine of leaves with my Dad, skiing and camping. Today is October 12th, 2021 and I am still going to be giving you a lot, it’s going to look a little different – love, experiences, education and a healthy planet.

Dear Tomorrow,

Don’t use plastic straws!

To my daughter and her children,

As a minister, I have preached that we are here to be of service to others and to be care takers of this wonderful planet that God has given us.
