Dear Future self,

By the year 2050 you’ll be about 50 years old. I hope that the world has very different mindset about the environment than it does right now. In class, it seems like 2040 is one of the dates that comes up over and over again as a necessary turning point for our future. If everything went accordingly, I hope you can still go to Nantucket in the summer and see the family house. It’s not threatened by the rising ocean levels yet but some people are saying the entire island could be gone in the next hundred years. I hope that you took action to reduce your own emissions and to advocate for environmental policy. I’ve gotten very good at learning about and talking about the environment but I know I can get better at actually helping it. I hope single-use plastic is a distant memory and that Loyola finally got a dishwasher. Most of all, I hope that you still have hope for the world moving forward. Helping the environment won’t stop with one generation–it needs to be a continuous effort that we improve every day.

More Messages to the Future

I pledge to use less plastic.

Dear loved ones in the future,

Even if it pains me to imagine how things are back home in Puerto Rico at the moment, I know things will flourish again. The land will heal, but we need to help it.

Dear Llewyn, beloved grandson …

I can only say that I devoted myself to doing as much as I could to make it better, to provide for a just transition, and to fight those forces that continued to exploit the Eaarth with extractive methods, methods that always also included oppressing some people–because those doing the oppression believed that they were better and deserved more.

Dear Evie of 2050,

I can feel the change happening — many people are working to transform the world.

To My Future Nephews,

I want you to see those corn fields in the north, the beautiful beaches down in Florida, and the stars in the woods at night.

AMORI MIEI EMMA DOMINGA E MAMMA AURELIE

Mamma e Papà cercano insieme sempre di darti il meglio però anche tu dovrai fare la tua parte nel mondo.

Dear Future Generations,

Dear Future Generations,

Dear Tomorrow,

No plastic straws, no water bottles, shop local, no meat.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to drive less and walk more.

Dear A and C,

You are growing up in a time of immense change. In the last two years alone, we’ve learned so much about big and important issues including climate change and the systemic racism that runs through our institutions.

Dear Tomorrow,

I feel optimistic for you, tomorrow. I can feel a shift happening already.

Dear future loved ones,

As I sit here and write to you, I’d like to share with you something more horrifying than a few boos – our current home, Earth.
