Dear Future Self,

Climate change is a growing issue. Once, it was a tiny spark that we thought wouldn’t affect us too much, or we were confident we would be able to stop it. Now it’s a raging fire, and if we don’t get our act together, we’re basically dead. In 20 years, climate change will be irreversible. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know if we don’t act now, it will be too late. I’m already trying my best to do my part:

1. I’m bringing metal straws with me. (No, I’m not Visco, I’m just doing my best)
2. I try not to take long showers. It helps that we live in Santa Monica because we have a lot of water saving appliances.
3. We donate our old clothes and toys that are in good condition so they can be used again. (God, Emily doesn’t even need to buy stuff!)
4. I’m in the social justice and empowerment club so we’ll be helping out with this issue. We’re already writing an environmental pledge.

I will do what I can do help, though I understand I can’t do this alone.
Kind Regards,
Sarah Misun Parmet (2019)

More Messages to the Future

Filha,

Saiba que enquanto eu tiver vida, minha voz não calará para alertar o mal que estamos fazendo agora para as nossas gerações futuras…

dear future children,

As I write this, our world is slowly giving way to climate change.

Dear World,

I vow that I will try to make a difference every day, so that you may enjoy the world as I have.

Dear Nolan, Patrick, Cullen and Gabriel,

This Mother’s Day I am again thinking of my grandsons future and what I am doing to change the world if only by a small fraction.

Dear Llewyn, beloved grandson …

I can only say that I devoted myself to doing as much as I could to make it better, to provide for a just transition, and to fight those forces that continued to exploit the Eaarth with extractive methods, methods that always also included oppressing some people–because those doing the oppression believed that they were better and deserved more.

Queridas crianças do mundo inteiro,

Pedimos que vocês procurem fazer como nós e continuem essa luta de colaborar com nosso planeta: evitando o consumo exagerado, usando a tecnologia para o bem, plantando árvores, economizando água e poluindo menos.

To My Friends, Family and Future Grandchildren,

I realize my reflection of the past, current and future state of the environment paints a grim and pessimistic picture, but I feel optimistic in our ability to turn planet Earth’s fate around if we all work together and commit to making a change.

Dear Society,

If we work together to spread the awareness of what is occurring today, we will be able to prevent it from continuing into the tomorrow.

Pick up your trash wherever you go!

Oh My Lovely Faizan,

I love you my son. You are waking up now. Hopefully tomorrow, more of us will, too.

To the Future Generations,

I look at my baby niece today. The newest member of our family, just 3 days old. What will be left for her and her grandchildren?

To My Fellow Two-Spirits,

Thank you — Thank you — without you, I would not hear butterflies singing, without you, I would not understand black bear humor, or the creativity of jays planning their breakfast, without you, I would not feel flora whispers of long-lived wisdom on the back of my neck while sitting in Padmasana.
