Dear future self,

It is currently the year 2018. Climate change is a serious issue and everyone needs to do better in doing their part in keeping our planet healthy. It makes me happy when I see companies and businesses ā€œgoing greenā€. For example, many businesses support going paperless for things such as bills and receipts. A few years ago, I would see foam containers at many restaurants but now I’ve seen that most have been replaced with compostable containers. Although, I have met many people who don’t believe in global warming or who simply don’t care about helping the environment. It’s really saddening and I try my best to help educate people about how important it is to do what they can to help the environment, especially with my friends and family. Whenever I see someone drinking a plastic water bottle or using plastic utensils at home, I remind them that it’s more environmentally friendly to use reusable items. Sometimes, I offer to wash the reusable utensils to show how important it really is. I make sure to always pick up litter and that my friends don’t litter as well.

I can’t imagine how Earth how will be in 2050, but I really hope that it gets better. I hope that it’s still safe to live in and that new rules and laws have been implemented. I hope that restaurants are required to get their produce supply locally. I hope that plastic straws, utensils, and water bottles are banned. I hope that most cars are eco-friendly and that less gasoline is being used than today. I really hope that more people learn the importance of how our daily actions can affect the world in our future. Some people don’t think it affects them directly, but it can because this is the world that your children and grandchildren will live in. We can reduce global warming if everyone makes the effort to help.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Elliot and Alana,

But being truthful, I know we are not yet on the path that will lead to the change that is needed; but it is visible.

Dear My Future Child,

I want to sculpt a world for you where you can play outside without gas masks, an ocean to swim in without toxins, and a thick lively forest for you to wander.

Dear Emilia and Tommy,

We, in our time, still have the chance to change course. We have the knowledge and emergent means, even the profitable technologies, to do so.

Dear Daughter,

Tonight at bedtime, you asked, seemingly out of nowhere, “why are the glaciers disappearing?”

Dear Future Today,

Here in California we’re starting to recognize our climate changing the natural world around us.

Our Shared Promise

I will act today so you may have a healthy earth to live on.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to go DEEP GREEN

Dear Tomorrow,

Don’t use plastic straws!

To my beloved granddaughters, Margaret and Caroline,

Growing up in Germany, I often wondered what my parents had done to oppose the Nazi regime in the 1930’s that led to WWII.Ā  I was so disappointed when I found out how passive they had been. For me, this was formative.

Dear Tomorrow,

I have solar and will be getting an electric car next week

Dear grandchild,

There is a place on this planet called the Amazon, and I don’t mean the online shopping site (is that still a thing in your time?).

Dear Evie of 2050,

I can feel the change happening — many people are working to transform the world.
