Dear Future Me,

I am writing this as an update of where we are now and as a sounding board for what I hope we will achieve in the coming year. Global climate change has begun to take such drastic effect that it is now both tangible and visible for people in many different parts of the world. As it continues to hurt people’s lives, we, as a population, do not seem to be doing nearly enough to actually aid the problem. Far too often people post about and talk about climate change without actually altering their daily regimens or doing anything substantial to aid the problem. I hope, in the coming years, people will begin to alter their own individual actions in order to reduce waste, the production of fossil fuels, etc. in addition to contributing to the problem on a group/national scale. I would love to see some effective changes to U.S. law on the front of climate change and do not see that as an unreasonable hope for the future.

More Messages to the Future

Querida Emanoely,

Gostaria que você se lembrasse das lições simples que mamãe e papai te ensinou, como cuidar das plantas e dos espaços coletivos.

To My Fellow Two-Spirits,

Thank you — Thank you — without you, I would not hear butterflies singing, without you, I would not understand black bear humor, or the creativity of jays planning their breakfast, without you, I would not feel flora whispers of long-lived wisdom on the back of my neck while sitting in Padmasana.

Oh My Lovely Faizan,

I love you my son. You are waking up now. Hopefully tomorrow, more of us will, too.

Queridas crianças do mundo inteiro,

Pedimos que vocês procurem fazer como nós e continuem essa luta de colaborar com nosso planeta: evitando o consumo exagerado, usando a tecnologia para o bem, plantando árvores, economizando água e poluindo menos.

Dear Annie and Eric,

I hope that this life of good things is not just yours to enjoy, but that you also have decided to fight for others to have this life, too.

Dear Kai and Leah,

I want you to feel awestruck like I do. It is important to feel small sometimes, to feel the weight of reality, to recognize the scale of a challenge, to see where you fit and what you are up against. This is the case with climate change.

Dear Maret,

Right now I want to be hopeful. Right now I want to think that we took action to ensure this beautiful future for you.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to ride a bike and take a smart train.

Dear June and Colin,

I’m sad and angry that collectively more has not been done to this date. And that still with such dire warnings, obvious impacts, those in power are acting far too slowly.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to buy organic food and run more and bike more! (I could use the exercise.)

Fe,

As one push of a button can set a spinner in motion, so too can the actions of one in creating a world that allows you to thrive, to giggle, to love.

Dear Tomorrow,

This is just the beginning. It’s the accrual of little seeds of change that will lead to the tree of revolution.
