Dear Future Grandchildren,

I promise for the sake of your future…

I will never litter and if other people do I’ll pick it up.

I will try to use as little plastic as I can.

I promise I’ll try my best to improve your future lifestyle.

I hope when your born everyone will be seen as accepted and I hope nothing extremely bad happens to you.

And at last, I hope our generation, our world, has improved on changing how they live for climate change.

More Messages to the Future

Dear Maret,

Right now I want to be hopeful. Right now I want to think that we took action to ensure this beautiful future for you.

To my dear son Zac,

I promise to raise you as a loving-nature human.

Dear Ezmae,

As I write this, I consider giving up as it sometimes seems that all is lost. But then I think of you.

My Mini & Lou,

Since I first sat down with these words, a pandemic has erupted. Racial violence is reaching a fever pitch and protests are raging across the nation. It feels like the planet is succumbing to entropy, slipping further into chaos. But I write to you from a time of shifting tides.

Dear Samuel, Willa, and Ben,

To the core of my being, and only through the power of community, I will honor the voices of the youth who are pleading, β€œDon’t burn my future.” Samuel, Willa, and Ben, your little voices I know, will join that chorus soon enough.

Dear Sinchi,

The world is changing and it is happening fast.

Dear Ellie,

My heart is an ocean of love for all the children facing a life of climate catastrophe.

Dear Evan,

We want your future family to enjoy the same beautiful places we enjoyed.

Dear Yasmine,

I tried to teach you of the importance of being satisfied with what you had within your hands.

Dear Future,

I will use less plastic.

Dear You Tomorrow,

What we failed to do, at least early on, was to see how important it was to put those solutions together. To combine into a way forward.

Dear Great Grandchildren,

If you are reading this, you probably inherited my fascination with ancestry, and the way it uncovers incredible stories of unlikely survival.
