Dear Future Generations,

I hope the world you live in is not plagued with rising temperatures, wildfires, acidic oceans, pollution, increased flooding, and extreme storms. I hope that, unlike our generation, you do not have to fight for your right to live on a clean, safe planet. Not only do you deserve it, but so does our planet. It has been mistreated for hundreds of years, and it is about time that there is a change.

I promise that our generation will take care of this for you. Your generation will not have to carry on our fight to end climate change and environmental injustices. Your world will be liveable, equitable, and safe.

More Messages to the Future

To my dear children in the year 2050,

I don’t wish to go backwards, but I do wish we would slow down and design our brave new world with more care.

Chers Enfants,

Chers Enfants,

Dear Tomorrow,

I’ll buy only food that I plan to eat before it spoils.

The gift for next generation,

To save the big world, perhaps, we should change the mind from myself to my small family to my community.

Dear Future Self,

More than getting through a global pandemic that has already taken hundreds of thousands of lives around the world, our true feat is even larger: to secure our long-term health and the health of the ecosystems upon which we depend for life. To do that, we have to cut our emissions in half in the next ten years, and continue to reduce it beyond that. And to succeed in that, we need to fundamentally shift the way we do EVERYTHING.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to put in a rain catcher tank.

Dear Maddie,

Please know that I have tried very hard to be one of those people, to even make the smallest of changes in order to improve the world for you and your future.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to ride more and drive less.

Dear Makena,

Sweetie, you deserve clean air, water and soil. You deserve to thrive in an environment that supports you.

Loved One,

That we all have a role to play no matter how small, we all can make a difference.

My dearest children Ameilia and Alivia,

I want you to hear the whispers of the seasons changing. The rustling of leaves as they gracefully cascade down from their limbs in the fall, birds singing in spring, and frogs that serenade the summer night.

To my beloved granddaughters, Margaret and Caroline,

Growing up in Germany, I often wondered what my parents had done to oppose the Nazi regime in the 1930’s that led to WWII.  I was so disappointed when I found out how passive they had been. For me, this was formative.
