Dear Future Generations,

In 2019, I am scared for the future. I am afraid that my generation and the generations before me are continuing to ruin the environment to the point of no return. Currently, the U.S. is one of the main countries that are contributing to the pollution of Earth. Right now I am living in San José, California where the population is increasing each year and is resulting in an increase in energy usage. In today’s government, there are many politicians who believe that our planet is not in danger. Also, many individuals continue to ignore the fact that global warming is a myth and refuse to take action.

Currently, there are people who are trying to find ways that we can reduce the use of natural gases and oil. Unfortunately, the U.S. heavily depends on natural gases and oil and does not want to support renewable energy. Maybe later in the future, there will be a time where people will make renewable energy affordable and easy to access. I hope that by the year 2050 there is only renewable energy being used and oil is no longer the main source for energy consumption. I hope that the only cars that will exist are powered by renewable energy.

However, I still have hope. And I hope that you look at the world in 2050 and breathe in clean air, experience playing in the snow, and know that polar bears and other animals are not extinct. I hope that my generation and the past generation were able to fix our issues and that the world is in better condition. I hope that you are reading in your history textbooks about how everyone got together despite their differences and cleaned up their polluting habits. I wish that in the future there will be forests and that children will be breathing fresh clean air and drinking clean water in all countries.

More Messages to the Future

To My Future Self,

This lead me to my final project, which focused on reforming the education system to incorporate sustainability classes into the current curriculum.

To earth & its inhabitants,

Its been heavy on my shoulders since I found out about the state of climate woes as a child.

To my future self,

It is today on March 6th, 2017 that you have made the decision to make a difference in this world.

Rachel and Noelle,

I hope in a small way this helps your world.

Dear Tomorrow

I will become the change I wish to see in the world.

Anya,

All you can do is your best. You can encourage the same in others. You can admit your mistakes and those of your ancestors. You can learn from them, and help however you can. I’ll do the same. I promise.

Dear Maya,

Maya, my love, I promise to be courageous. I promise that when I face a decision, I will think of how it will impact you and your future. I promise that I’ll also step outside my individual decisions and add my weight to the forces that shift culture and systems.

Dear Madeleine,

First of all I hope we succeeded in our dream that yours is a better world than the world of 2021. Today, the forests are burning, the sea levels are rising and wild weather is everywhere. But we are working hard and I’m confident we will succeed.

To my Children,

As you look through your window, I hope you will see a bright future. I hope you dream big, and that you have the courage, drive, and fortitude to do everything you can to achieve those dreams.

Dear Lillyana,

I will continue to work to make the Earth a cleaner and safer place for you to grow and explore.

To my dear son,

Last year most of the world’s reefs turned white at some point, but because it was underwater you and your friends didn’t see.

Dear Kiya,

Fighting for a system that rewards care for people and planet over profit.
