Dear Future Generations,

I hope you can forgive us. Some of us are really trying to fix the mess that has been created, and I am wishing it will be enough. There is too much greed and corruption in this world, and the power is not in the hands of those who care. The leaders of our nations are not behind us, they are taking care of things they deem to be more important like engaging in wars and building new and improved weapons. They say they care about our safety; they do not. They care about making money. If our leaders cared about our safety, they would be protecting the Earth. Instead, they are focusing on improving ways in which we can destroy it more quickly and efficiently. This is the situation humanity is in right now.

We know what needs to happen in order for us to survive, and people are beginning to listen. We need to adopt vegan lifestyles, stop driving cars, produce less waste, etc. Throughout the world, veganism is on the rise. Although it has had a slow start, support for plant-based diets has taken the world by storm. In my own family, three out of eight of us have adopted vegan lifestyles, whereas three years ago none of us were vegan. Things are changing, I hope it is not too late.

I am trying so hard to protect you. I lead a vegan lifestyle, I refuse to purchase a car (even when it has seemed like a necessity), I attend all sorts of marches and protests calling on our leaders to take action. Will it be enough? I am only one person. I do not know what else I can do, and it is frustrating beyond belief.

I am sorry humanity has borrowed so much from the future that there is so little left for you. I hope it is enough. You deserve to experience a world as beautiful as it is today in 2017. You can count on me to do everything I can to ensure this happens.

More Messages to the Future

I pledge to stop using plastic bags.

Dear Daughter,

Even when contemplating huge global-historical issues — especially then — it’s important to stay grounded in the present time and place, the specific here and now, and the minute affairs of everyday interpersonal relations.

Dear Grandchildren — August and any others who were born after him

I joined millions of other people who wrote letters and made calls urging our leaders to do more to care for the planet.

Dear Tomorrow,

The only way to survive it, even if you don’t feel like you’re winning, is to keep your hands on the rope.

Dear Rowan and Anaka,

If we could talk, I would not be able to bear your gaze as you ask: How could you, the people in a position to change the course of climate change, fail to act?

Dear Yasmine,

I tried to teach you of the importance of being satisfied with what you had within your hands.

I promise to help people! Become more aware!

Dear Potential Future Kiddo,

To think that my choices of sustainable commuting, eating a plant based diet, and working on our City’s zero waste program likely pale in comparison to the impact of not having a baby is nothing short of devastating.  Does it make me a bad environmentalist to honor my maternal instincts?

To my fellow adventurers,

Don’t stop looking for adventures.

Dear tomorrow,

Unfortunately, our selfishness and excessive greed have closed our eyes to the well-being of the planet, and it has suffered the consequences.

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to drive less and walk more.

To my precious children

I want clean air, clean energy and muddy feet for you. I want this for all children.
