Dear Future Family,

While I am writing to you now, I am looking outside of my window as the snow is falling here in Montana. It’s a beautiful scene to witness, for I adore all of the seasons here in, even the harsh winters.

As I’m sitting here trying to think of the best words to say to you all, I am thinking of one major thing: that I can only hope that you all get to experience the incredible beauty created by our planet. I hope so badly that you get to spend most of your summer months outside hiking to mountain lakes, camping underneath the stars, watching the wildflowers come and go, and soaking up the warm sun, taking in all of the beauty around you. And that in the winter months you’ll be able to go skiing and snow shoeing, and hike through the snow to sit in natural hot springs located in the middle of the forest. I hope that you get to see and experience the beauty this world has to offer, and get to appreciate it like I have.

It scares me to think that this might not be possible for you.

Things are looking grim right now for the future of our planet, and even our species, if our current generation can’t change the way we live. Things still have a chance to be saved and turned around, but with the political mess involved in making those important decisions, it’s hard to say where things are going to be headed. I’m trying hard to play my part by getting involved in climate change rallies and changing my lifestyle to more sustainable options for you guys and your generation, but some days I still can’t help but have feelings of hopelessness. I try not to succumb to these feelings, and instead think about all of the amazing things so many people are doing each day to try and make the world a better place so that we can create a safe, healthy, and thriving environment for ourselves and for all of you.

I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that our planet, and all of the life forms on it, including the human species, have an amazing ability to adapt and to continue moving forward. This gives me hope that in the end of the day, we’ll all be able to make the changes needed and be able to preserve our beautiful home and ourselves. I promise to you that I will never give up the fight for our planet, and will always have your well-being in the back of my mind while doing so.

I hope that whatever is going on in the world for you right now, whether it be good or bad, that you always have hope and determination, and remember that it is up to you to be the change you wish to see in the world.

All my love,

Kelly

Dear grandchild,

There is a place on this planet called the Amazon, and I don’t mean the online shopping site (is that still a thing in your time?).

As I write this, our world is slowly giving way to climate change.

To the future generations,

I will stand on the streets, in the courts, and in the schools to encourage awareness and empathy for the earth.

Climate is undeniably changing but it is not top priority.
