Dear Future Explorers,

I am often faced with the question: why do I care so much about this pale blue dot that we inhabit? It’s hard to answer a question about something that means so much to you but also plays such large role to your existence. It’s so easy to continue to live your life almost as if this Earth isn’t as important as it really is. It’s easy to feel big; I work, I laugh, I love, I learn. My life impacts so many people every day because of my actions and my choices.

The reason the environment means so much to me is because of the small but big role that we play in it. It’s humbling for me to realize that in the grand scheme of things, on this planet there are so many other people, other animals, other lives that are apart from mine. They pass me on the streets and continue on with their lives that I have no idea about, but they are also striving for their own goal. The choices that I make impact them too.

Throughout the amount of time that I spend on this Earth, I choose what I want my mark to be. To me, I want to promise that this Earth will be preserved, as beautiful and as breathtaking at it is for me to be on it now. Our home has been here for billions of years before us and will continue to be here for billions of years after us. How we fit into that storyline is determined by our actions now. I hope that my generation leaves their mark on the preservation of this land, and I hope that your generation will be as passionate about its beauty. I promise I will do everything I can for you to have something to be passionate for.

Looking forward, feeling the entire weight of the world on our shoulders, we need to realize our humble place on this Earth. How everything you do, everything you have, is because of this beautiful pale blue dot. Love it. Cherish it. There’s so much to love, there’s so much to give love to so I hope you explore this Earth and find joy in it.

Stay Lovely,

Nicole

More Messages to the Future

Dear Maya,

Maya, my love, I promise to be courageous. I promise that when I face a decision, I will think of how it will impact you and your future. I promise that I’ll also step outside my individual decisions and add my weight to the forces that shift culture and systems.

Dear My Future Child,

I want to sculpt a world for you where you can play outside without gas masks, an ocean to swim in without toxins, and a thick lively forest for you to wander.

Dear Jack,

Right now you are only a little over 5 weeks old, but you have truly changed my whole world. Your Mom and I always say that we thought we loved before you were born, but now that you have come into the world and we met you, our ability to love just expanded exponentially.

To Annika, Anders, Stella, Eva, and Mickey,

In writing to you, I realize that I don’t want you to be hard on yourself if you choose to not make this your cause. But it is mine, so I hope that you hold me accountable to some of what I wrote here.

Dear future me,

I’m doing this work because I see it as the best way to save and improve as many lives as possible. I’m doing it so you, 2050 Ryan, can look at yourself in the mirror. And so you can tell your kids and grandkids someday that you did everything you could.

To My Future Children,

Most importantly, I hope you live in a world where science is taken seriously and fact is clearly distinguished from fiction.

Dearest Finlay,

I hope you are healthy and happy and that you feel supported by the ecosystem around you because we are all deeply truly interconnected. We depend on the earth to take care of us, and nature needs us to take care of her in turn. We all need each other.

Dear Ari and Levi,

Luckily, we have figured out ways to build things without making the air dirty, and we are trying very hard to get more people to switch over to this new way as fast as we can.

To my future children,

I am doing everything I can because I want the footprint that I leave behind to be my feet in the sand on a beach and not a carbon one.

Dear Tomorrow,

The only way to survive it, even if you don’t feel like you’re winning, is to keep your hands on the rope.

Querido amanhã,

Eu quero esse mundo melhor para você, onde o povo tem voz, seja lá quem você seja, eu vou fazer se tudo para proporcionar um mundo melhor para você.

Dear fantastic,

We as the human race are smarter than this struggle at hand and need to rise above large corporate interests and confusion on this topic.
