Dear Future Children,

I am writing this letter to you as I sit in Starbucks on March 4, 2018 at 12:00 pm. By the time you read this letter, you may be getting ready to move away from home and will be entering your young adult life. You are preparing to live on your own and develop traits that will ultimately shape you as a person.

I am writing this letter in hopes to inspire you to make changes like I have in my life that will help better the environment for your children and theirs. I am currently taking a sustainability class where we are learning about all of the effects of climate change and what we can do as a community and world to make this world a better place for future generations, like you, to live in. I have become very passionate about this topic and I hope to raise you to have this same passion in your heart and soul.

With the amount of things going on in the world that are out of our hands, there are so many things that are in our hands that humans are able to control. As a community, more people need to be educated on these things to learn what their effect is on the planet and what they can do to slow down the process of climate change.

Unfortunately, this problem has become so big that to many people it seems uncontrollable. I am writing this letter as a promise to you that I am going to continue to make changes in my life that will better your lives. I want to protect this planet so you can all receive the beauty that I have received in this world.

Dear Evan,

What has most inspired me to act is wanting to be able to look you in the eye and say, “When I became aware of the existential threat of climate change, I did all I could.”  Despite my pessimism, I act in the hope it can make a difference for future generations and all the precious life on our fragile planet.

Dear Tomorrow,

Awareness is key. Learning about this issue can seem like a small effort compared to other actions, but it’s the most important.
