Dear Future Children,

My hope for a sustainable future reflects my choice to have children at a time where many are not. It is my belief that the future of the natural environment relies heavily on our society’s ability to develop a renewed connection with nature, which is only possible through raising a new generation of planetary stewards.

I feel deep gratitude towards my own parents for raising me in a home at the base of a beautiful mountain and for dragging my three siblings and I along in camping, hiking, and backpacking trips in National Parks throughout my childhood. If not for these invaluable experiences, I would be closed off to an entire, magnificent community – that of the non-human biotic world, and would be a completely different person for it: less open-minded, less genuine to myself, and less sure of myself and my place in this world. Not only does climate change threaten to deplete humanity of necessary resources for life, it threatens to rid us of perhaps the most crucial and special element in our lives: a connection to the outdoors.

My dream is to raise children with a deep love for the outdoors. That is why I vow to learn as much as possible about the natural world now and use this knowledge to do all I can to fight for a sustainable future, one where the natural environment is wholly intact for you to explore, learn from, and enjoy.
