Dear future child,

Sometimes, I think about your future a lot. But not in the sense of what you’ll grow up to be- maybe an astronaut, teacher, fashion blogger? I think about what this world will look like for you and what consequences your generation due to the negligence from previous generations. Will this world be a better place? I sure hope so.

You will know I was born and raised on the West Coast, specifically the San Francisco Bay Area, and that I grew up with droughts and dry hills and bush fires. I’m not sure what this place will look like in the future, but I hope the beauty of the Bay is not ravaged by climate change and receding coast lines. I hope you can see the beauty that I have seen, I want it to be preserved for you and your children and your children’s children.

So I’m trying my best to incite some sort of change. Right now, in 2017, I have decided to educate myself more on sustainability and I have a desire to change my wasteful habits. For now I am some sort of novice, I’m not studying environmental science and I continue to contribute a lot more waste than I am aware of.

But I hope I will be able to read this letter with you and see the progress I will have made in transforming my impact on this planet. I hope to provide you with faith in humanity. We can create change if we use our voices. Don’t be afraid to use yours.

I will end with one last hope for you. I hope that you will see the earth and its beauty but also the wonderful communities people have built in working to save it.

Dear Maya,

Maya, my love, I promise to be courageous. I promise that when I face a decision, I will think of how it will impact you and your future. I promise that I’ll also step outside my individual decisions and add my weight to the forces that shift culture and systems.

Dear Jack,

Right now you are only a little over 5 weeks old, but you have truly changed my whole world. Your Mom and I always say that we thought we loved before you were born, but now that you have come into the world and we met you, our ability to love just expanded exponentially.

Dear Alanna and Valeria,

I promise you to keep trying, to keep educating, to keep pushing our elected officials to act and protect your health now and in the future.

Dear Tomorrow,

Don’t use plastic straws!

Dear friends,

Rather than exploit it, destroy it, poison it, why don’t we just enhance the beauty of it, guard it, and love it?

Pick up your trash wherever you go!

Dear Tomorrow,

I promise to go DEEP GREEN
