Dear future child,

Even though I don’t know who you are right now, I can only imagine that you are doing good. Maybe you are flying to school in hover cars or driving some “old” Honda. I’m not really sure how the world is going to look actually. I would like to picture it as some cool futuristic world where everything is made out of glass and chrome. But in reality, I imagine it will look similar but just with new things and technology sprinkled throughout it. Honestly, I just hope it is better.

I really hope we solved some problems for you, so that you don’t have to worry. Climate change is such a large issue that I truly think about everyday. I try to read as much as I can, and educate myself as much as I can, so that I can help and be useful. I hope you will do the same. I feel like it is a person’s duty to save the planet, because if you don’t, who will?

Everyday I try to lower the bad I put into the world and increase the good. I try to be conscious about buying and wasting. I don’t eat meat and rarely eat milk and cheese. I use eco-friendly and homemade laundry detergent. I rarely drive a car and walk or bike instead. I reduce my electricity use and make sure to efficiently use energy. I read and educate myself and others to spread the word. I work in a community garden and use food I plant myself.

A lot of barriers I face are because of my age and lack of experience and time. As a college student I am very underqualified for any higher position to help the world. So I work hard at my personal footprint instead. Also, I know it is selfish, but sometimes there just isn’t enough time in the day. Somedays I lay down and think, what did I do for the world today? And someday’s the answer is nothing.

But for you, I will make time. Because the earth took all it’s time to give me beautiful nature and animals and seasons. I will work with companies and communities and friends and family and strangers to improve the planet. This means enacting laws and acts in government, changing the mindset of people across the world, changing the capitalist mindset in business. This means working in communities and neighborhoods to creates small legislates that can grow. This means making time and breaking down the stigma that young peoples ideas are somehow invalid.

I plan to graduate college and work for the earth. I don’t mean this literally. Mother Nature isn’t going to dial me into a conference call about the annual budget. But whatever job I’m at or wherever I am, I plan to continually and tirelessly work to improve the planet. For you.

I’m sad we had to deal with other generations problems, so I will do everything to make the world as beautiful and bright and lovely as possible for you. And the rest of the world. The world isn’t some thing you live on, it is something you live with. You treat it with care, you love it. Because it is beautiful.

Future Mom

Dear ACS, LG, CM, MCD, AH, MS, AS, GL, and ERD,

I commit to demanding that politicians that want my vote, my time, my substantial help and expertise are people who seek to address climate change seriously and talk about it boldly.

Dear future me,

I’m doing this work because I see it as the best way to save and improve as many lives as possible. I’m doing it so you, 2050 Ryan, can look at yourself in the mirror. And so you can tell your kids and grandkids someday that you did everything you could.

To my Dad,

I hope on this Father’s Day, my 24th birthday, and the rest of days, we remember that the most basic part of life is living happy with the ones we love. Acting every day against climate change will allow us to keep that simple piece of humanity.
